5th Wheel SuperCrew
5th Wheel SuperCrew
In case anyone told you that this is impossible, let me correct them. There is ample room to install a bed-thru-frame 5th hitch in a Crew. I Installed the ball/gooseneck hitch in mine. I am only 3" behind the axle and around 30" behind the front of the bed. I use this to haul cattle, and it handles this load like a dream. My boss has a 4.6 crew, and he 5th wheels a 25' camper, and b-trains a boat behind it! Ford tough......
CAN vs SHOULD
I believe it is the Titanium brand of RV that shows their trailer hooked to a S'crew. Don't know how they did the install or if it was just a "picture". Of course you know that your hitch is mounted incorrectly- it should be in FRONT of the axle not behind it. Please be safe.
I always fall back on the old addage: Just because you can do something doesn't necessarily mean that you should do it.

The Titanium version (24 ft) that Glendale makes has a over cab shape that won't bang the cab of a SCrew. Its angled in the lower section (V-shaped) to allow turning. By doing this you can install the 5th wheel shoe properly in a short bed truck. The only thing I see that makes me wonder is the overall height of the 5'er. Since the lower section is V-shaped they make it a bit taller (my eye ball appraisel) to accomodate an over the bed sleeping area in the trailer. I passed one of these on the 10 freeway near Palm Springs. They look really tall, but really cool behind SCrews.
I agree with Nomo, you may be able to make it work but do not expect Ford to support you. It says in your owners manual that you cannot use a fifth wheel with the Screw. It also says you cannot plow but people do that as well. Just do not cry when Ford does not warranty certain items.
My parents have a 5th wheel and I know you can get extenders for the trailer hitch to give more clearance on a short bed pickup. I don't know if it provides enough for a SuperCrew. The way my dad has his hitch mounted it is slightly behind the rear axle. His truck is a f350 with a 9' flat bed so it's not at all the same type of rig. As far as the ride it doesn't seem to make any difference from the Chevy3500 longbed he had previously, other than the trailer front rides too high on the flatbed. He told me that he could also have an extension made for the trailer that converted it to a goose neck that the bed was built with.
Norm has a good point about the warranty. The other thing that comes to mind is that some states allow people to ride in the 5th wheel because it is attached over the axel or something like that. If you did a custom type hitch I wouldn't let anyone ride in the trailer for legal/safety concerns.
