Angry Tranny Probs.

HELP!!! Here's the story: I live in Germany with an American SuperCrew and have thought the world of the truck until today. I was cruising down the autobahn at 85 or so and suddenly noticed smoke from the rear. Very worried I stopped and searched, praying it wasn;t dead. Instead I found transmission fluid all over my exhaust where the left side joins the right side. Upon further inspection I found oil all over EVERYTHING to include muffler, spare, and hitch. Had it towed to the dealer from 60 Km away scared silly. Everytime I start it to just move it to put on the wrecker there is A LOT of fliud on the ground. My truck only has 23,000 on it and those are babied miles. Any ideas? Thanks.

Do you think it was your real pinion seal that leaked? I think that has been a somewhat common (or rather not uncommon) problem. I had mine fixed around 12K.

At least you got it to the dealer and it is still under warranty. Just stay on top of them and make sure they do what is right for you. It will work out.

Let us know how it turns out.

Silverscrew: I read an entry in the f150online about a guy fling down the interstate at about 95 mph when he had the same problem, his findings were that the rear tranny seal had backed out under pressure from the tranny at that high of speed, and dumped oil, tranny fluid, all over the place, the dealer fixed the problem. You are only the second person I have read about with this problem......good luck

SilverCrew,
The tranny extension housing bushing has either spun out of position or is damaged. There is a Ford tech service bulletin on this subject on SCrews manufactured before 3/1/2001. Usually, a vibration is felt before it goes out and it is typically at high speeds.
Good luck,
Kevin

tranny clunk

Did you have the tranny clunk prior to problem. Has anyone got a cure for the 2>1 clunk in the yoke setup? I have struggled with the dealer on this problem at 21K for about a year. They replaced springs, shaft, brakes and now say it is normal and that most of the f150 line has this sytemic problem. Any help for a ford fan? Thanks.

kibitz,

There was a Ford TSB #01-13-7 issued in July 2001 for the 2-1 downshift clunk. Apparently the "planet support spring" was installed properly and as a result, the planet gear support makes contact with the transmission case during downshift. It's about a 6-8 hour repair procedure...and as such...have heard that some dealers just replace the entire transmission.

Good luck in your endeavour!

Thumbs up Resolution??

Well,.... After several days of nothingness, the dealer here finally looked at it and told me he will replace the ENTIRE transmition. Didn't exactly say what the problem was, but reassured me about 10 times that everything will be covered under warranty. With my limited Deutch and his limited English we came to an understanding on everthing but a loaner car. He didn't understand the idea of him giving me a car. Called Ford and they said that loaners are only giving in the States, and that part of my warranty is no good over here. Bummer. Well, thanks for all of the help. Will let you know more when get it back. 2 weeks.

my '02 s-crew was experiencing the clunk/shudder thing when i pulled up to a stop. and the local ford shop just lubed up the slip yoke and that seems to have cured the problem...
