I bought one on E-BAY and luckly had a friend in the Kansas City area to bring it home for me. I did call UPS, FEDex, AIRBORN. Airborn was the cheapest at 60 bucks. The problem is the size, not the weight. When I was talking to AIRBOURN I told them it was an awkward size but really light so he was going to bill me by weight instead of size. UPS said its a chance the driver would just ship it because its not heavy, but if they are having a bad day they could say its too big and charge the extra charge which was over 100 bucks. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply rsav. I'm having the EXACT SAME PROBLEM. I've found two extenders that folks are willing to sell to me but, they're not within an easy driving distance to go pick up.

Anyone else have any experience with large items, such as the bed extender? Any insight or alternative shipping methods available?

You might try the USPS. I mailed a long package (7' long X 6" round, about 20 lbs) recently from GA to TX for $14. Might be worth a shot.

Good Luck!

I had the exact same problem with a bed extender and officially the USPS goes by the total of the three external dimensions. The original equipment box total dimensions for the extender is a few inches over what the USPS will allow for parcel post. Now whether an individual postal clerk will object and refuse to accept it is another question.
I suspect they might as the box has to be measured so postage can be assessed.

Thanks for the reply docker. I've been studying
http://postcalc.usps.gov/ and it's looking more and more like this thing can actually be shipped fairly cheap. The way that the postoffice's site reads is:

A LARGE PACKAGE IS: (The length of its longest side plus the distance around its thickest part is more than 84" and less than or equal to 108").

Going on some measurements that I think are pretty sound, I'm only coming up with a grand total of around 75". Which actually classifies it as a 'regular package'.

I'm using 18X48X24 as the measurements. Thus, 48" plus 24"...only 72"... plus a few inches of 'fudge'.... 75".

Am I reading the site correctly? I'm using a weight of 20 pounds which, again, I think is pretty conservative because I hear it only weighs around 15 pounds. Have I done this correct? Thanks.

I think thepostal charges may have changed. It was a year and a half ago when I tried. What you might do is go to or phone your post office and see what they quote you. What you are coming up with is much fairer considering the relative feather weight for size of package.

Enjoy (I bought my screw so early on that the bed extender was not even available to order!)
