Highway Wind Noise
Highway Wind Noise
I've been experiencing a lot of wind noise at speeds of 55 and above. It seems worse on a windy day. Is this to be expected with this truck, or maybe it's the vent visors (front and back) I had Ford install on it?
Thanks,
Robin

I can vouch for Chevrolet. I owned a 1997 Blazer and you're exactly right, VERY VERY little wind noise or exterior noise. It was nice. And ya know what? When it wasn't in the shop, it had a pretty decent sound system too...
It's ashame that those were the only two nice things about that POS. Trasmission problems, Fuel Guage problems, it would randomly fall into 4wd on it's own...
So, yeah, it was a nice quiet ride with a nice sound system but, basically, overall, it was mechanically a PIECE OF JUNK!
With the sunroof in my screw, the only wind noise that really bothers me is the noise from the roof open. Other than that... we, as SCREW owners, have to deal with the noise.

Just how much wind noise are you guys hearing? This is my third late model F series and it's the quietest of them all. My '97 was really noisy to the point where a conversation at 55 mph into a headwind was difficult. Dealer fixed it.
My '01 SuperCrew is quiet enough that I can hear the radio (3 bars on volume meter with speed volume set at 1) and have a normal conversation at 55 mph even driving into a 30 mph headwind.

Often catch myself trying to roll up a window that isn't down. I actually think there is more noise in the Screw than my F350.

Man, I must have been lucky with my SuperCrew. Either that, or I'm going deaf... That's why I put that in about the radio volume and having conversations. Hell, when I'm on my cellphone, the only way my friends know I'm on the road is if I have the radio on. Otherwise, they can't tell.
Maybe I'm more used to trucks than you folks are? It sure isn't a Lexus, but for a truck it's pretty damned quiet.

I'm on my 3rd F150 in 6 years... my Screw is quieter, much quieter than the other two. Really haven't noticed any problem at all with it................
Except for that darn window popping up at highway speeds, loose battery connection, and broken *** on bed extender.
Overall......... it's GREAT.

Last night I took the door panels off and sprayed some sound dampening stuff on the doors. There was nothing on them. I still have the panels off to let it dry but plan to put them back on tonight. I am taking a road trip this weekend and will post when I return to let you know if it makes any difference.
All in all I can't complain though. It is a truck, and I do have a grill guard which probably adds a little noise. But I'm going deaf anyway so.....

I agree the wind noise is there at 55mph or better, but it's not THAT bad. My Acura TL is quieter, but it's not a truck. My '97 Dakota was so bad that I used weather stripping around the doors and put dynamat sound deadner in the doors and the walls of the extended cab. It did help to some degree, but the s'crew is quieter untouched. An earlier post said there wasn't anything in the door to quiet exterior noise, but when I had the power window bezel off I saw what looked to be a fiber blanket running across the door. That would cut some of the exterior noise, but probably not any caused by the wind.

I agree that the new F-150's are quieter, but the problem is that there is that dang wind noise that shouldn't be there---like the door or window is not shut all the way. Maybe I'll try some weather stripping too.
You guys that owned chevy's must have not owned the extended cabs, because those back window seals all leak on the chevy's, you can see the light through them, even the owners complainted about them...
Tip on finding wind noise, have someone else drive, and start moving your head around the windows until the leak gets louder and some feeling of your hand on the big leaks work as well..
Or use compressed air on the outside around the windows and listen inside for the leak...
Usually its the silicone bead they put down around the windshield that leaks...

About 2 months after taking delivery I installed Vent Visors and a low profile bug shield. I got tired of jacking with wind noise and whistles, and about a month later I pulled it all off and my sCrew is as quiet as it was before. This truck is one of the most Quiet veichles I have ever owned.
