Question Rear Passenger Windows

Is anybody else irritated that the rear windows don't go down all the way? It's not like the door has to conform to the rear wheel wells like most passenger cars do, which limits the space for the window to go down into.

Okay, it's such a minor thing, but am I the only one wondering why they couldn't have made it go all the way down?

I've wondered about it. Always wondered why my 1997 Chevrolet Blazer (piece of scrap metal junk) would go all the way down when my 98 Explorer and now my 01 King Ranch wouldn't. (I only have the KR now).

Anyone know how or if this mod can be performed?

Safety Feature

I believe this is a mandated safety feature that all vehicles must adhere to. I'm not sure when it went into effect, but my 96 Jeep GC did the same thing....

Not sure about the "safety" requirement. The rear windows on crew-cab Super Duty trucks go all the way down.

I was also disappointed about them not "rolling" down all the way. But not enough to keep from buying it.

Yea I drive from the front seat too...

But I do belive it is a saftey thing, I have seen it on older cars/trucks/suvs as well.

Cars/trucks/suvs geared tward familys such as the f-150 supercrew unlike the superduty (marketed more tward the work place) would have these saftey features so that the kids in the back have the windows that don't roll all the way down and the child saftey locks. It would be cool to have a switch up front in the glove compartment or something that would allow the windows in the back to go all the way down, perhaps activated like the airbag on/off with a key?

just an idea

I don't think it has anything at all to do with safety, otherwise all cars would be the same. It is more likely a product of sharing the same mechanism with the rear doors of the Expedition (which does have rear wheel cutouts). If you were really ingenious, I'm sure you could modify the linkage geometry to make the windows retract 100%. Hmmm, might make a good aftermarket kit, probably not a large enough market for it, though.

I don't think any class of vehicle is exempted from safety rules. Emissions rules- yes; but not safety ones. My SD has child-safety locks on the back doors just like F150s & Expeditions.

Yes, this is obviously not a safety mandate, as every car would be the same. I believe the sharing with the Expedition personally. Everything else is Expedition gear. They should have called it the Expedition Sport Trac like they did with the Explorer Sport Trac.

Sharing with the Expy. That makes a ton of sense to me. Just wish they didn't do that shortcut, but I have this feeling that if they did make the windows lower all the way, they'd tack on another $500 to the price...

JerPamB,

The Dodges go all the way down cause their girlie trucks????

dufunnel,

No... the Explorer Sport Trac was named Explorer for the same reason the SuperCrew is an F150.

Explorer is #1 SUV, Sport Trac ensures that buyers that would have bought an Explorer but opt for the Sport Trac, still count as an Explorer. Same for SuperCrew and FSeries... I think #1 in trucks is more important to Ford than #1 in large SUVs... no?
