Rear Differential fluid
Rear Differential fluid
Question:
What is the 'official' recommendation for changing the fluid in a 5.4L 4x2 2001 SC rear differential?
The local Valvoline Oil Change shop recommends 15K and reports that the recommendations they receive about any interval comes straight from the manufacturer.
The local Ford service Rep says 100K (off the top of his head) I could tell he was not really looking anything up officially.
My Ford service manual that came with the truck mentions nothing (that I saw) about changing the read diff. fluid. Huh?
I know towing effects any suggested figures. However assume normal urban hwy. driving. What is the official recommendation?
Also does the back of the differential have to really be removed to change the fluid or will the vacuum method used by some work well enough?
Thanks

I'm too lazy to go out and get the manual, but I know there's something in there about the rear differential fluid being good for the life of the truck. The only time it needs to be changed (also in the book) is if you submerge the differential in water and the fluid gets contaminated. The oil type and additive to use if you have the LS rear is also in the book.
