Temperature display...
Driving home one night recently, I looked up at the temp and it said 37 degrees (cold night in San Diego) and was also flashing "ICE".
My question is, does it just flash that when it drops below a certin temp or are there other variables taken into account, such as the fact that it was raining that night and there was a lot of moisture/water on the truck?
If this is true then there must be a water sensor or something to that effect on the veichle. My guess is it's just saying that because of the temp.
It dosen't get that cold here in San Diego (closer to the coast) very often so I don't get to see the "ICE" (thank god) flash very often.

That's a new one on me.... We have the same truck, except I'm 2 wheel drive. i wonder if it could have anything to do with you having a 4x4?.... Best place for an answer would be the owners manual... I've been through colder weather than that up here in Sacramento, and have never seen mine do anything but the temperature...
I was in my boss's Explorer yesterday under similar conditions (37 degrees and raining) and his overhead console thermometer was flashing ICE, too, so it's a Ford thing. I wasn't driving my Screw that day so I don't know what it would have shown. Maybe it looks for 32-37 degrees and the wipers on!
I've alway wondered where the temperature sensor is located. Does anybody know? It can't be in the cabin with the display and the engine compartment/engine sensors seem like they would get hot and invalidate the reading...so where is it?

Saw it flash in my SCrew as well. It was Xmas morning. Was cold but certainly not freezing. I have a 2 wheel drive so it's not specific to the 4X4's. Maybe it sensed I haden't had my first cup of coffee yet
I looked it up in the manual on the way home from work. It is a precautionary signal that flashs every two seconds when under 38 degrees. I have never noticed it doing it on my truck.Maybe I should take my eyes off the road?....LOL

Everyone,
Mine has registered the same info at times on the display.
To answer the $64,000 question as to where the sensor is located, it's on the front apron under the hood and near the radiator. If you are not moving for long periods, the radiator will cause the sensor to get warmer than ambient air and the reading will be slightly warmer than the actual outside air temp. Once moving, the temp sensor will get plenty of fresh air to sample and give a more acurate depiction of the actual outside air temperature.
FYI from official Ford service data:
Electronic Compass
A compass and outside temperature display are contained in the overhead console.
The compass and temperature display can be turned off and on by pressing the MODE switch in the overhead console. The vehicle heading is displayed as one of N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, and NW.
Compass Accuracy
Magnetic mounted devices like antennas and luggage racks should not be located on the front third of the vehicle roof. Placing these devices near the compass will cause inaccurate directional readings. If these devices must be used, accuracy may be improved by recalibrating the compass while the devices are installed on the vehicle.
Driving near power lines, or driving in the area of large iron or steel structures can temporarily change the compass' heading. If the compass remains inaccurate after driving near such objects, demagnetize the vehicle, refer to «Vehicle Demagnetizing» and recalibrate the compass in this section.
Most geographic areas (zones) have a magnetic north compass point that varies slightly from the northerly direction on maps. This variation is four degrees between the adjacent zones and will become noticeable as the vehicle crosses multiple zones. A correct zone setting eliminates the error. Refer to «Compass Zone Adjustment» in this section.
Temperature, Outside Air
The thermometer sensor (15A022) is attached to the radiator frame behind the grille. The temperature can be displayed in Celsius or Fahrenheit by pressing the MODE switch.
If the outside temperature falls below 3.3ºC (38ºF), the display will alternate from "ICE" to the outside temperature at a two second rate for one minute.
The outside air temperature reading can be affected by engine heat when the vehicle is idling or has been off for less than two hours. The compass and thermometer (19A548) will limit the increase of the displayed temperature to one degree per minute at very low speeds or immediately after the ignition is turned on. After two minutes at a sustained speed of at least 53 km/h (33 mph), effects of engine heat are minimal and the compass will display the current outside temperature reading. Temperature decreases are always updated immediately.
If the outside air temperature sensor is short or open circuited, then the display will show 60ºC (140ºF) or -40ºC (-40ºF) respectively in place of temperature.

Sorry Guys,
But I have to jump in here on this display. Up north here we only see that flash two times durnig the year. In the fall when the tempatures drop and in the spring when in finnaly gets warm. Durning the rest of the winter it is "usually" to depressing to watch most of the time.

dcovell,
If I told you where I get all that info, I'd have to kill ya!
No, really I've got a disc from ebay that's got the entire 2001 Ford truck family including service procedures, entire electrical schematics and computer diagnostic testing on it. It can be had for as little as $8 on ebay. It includes every truck that Ford made for 2001. I think there's one now available for 2001-2002 and one for just 2002.
Hell, I'll go to ebay, do a search and give you the link so it'd be one click away.

Don't get used to this kind of genorosity though
