Question Parking brake question

Hi all,

Every once in awhile my parking brake pedal will jam all the way to the floor and make a ratcheting sound? Most times it goes half way with no sound. Which is correct? Both ways will turn the light on. Just want to know if this is a problem that should be taken to dealer.

I have a 2001 Supercrew, Gen III with headrests.

Thanks.

Cool

My Screw parking break does not make any sounds when pressed or depressed. I would have your break checked, prob needs a small adjustment.

Something is wrong with it. I drive a E350 van at work and had the same problem. Our mechanics replaced the pedal assembly to fix it. I don't know any specifics but could find out if you need it.

This sounds like a recall that I had on my '93 Explorer. A friend of mine at work had a '93 Ranger and had the recall performed. I had the same thing done after he recommended it. The dealer yanked the alarm wires loose from my fusebox in the process, but that's another story. I would not be surprised if the same mechanism is still in use.

When you pushed the pedal to the floor (as the ratcheting sound occurred), did the pedal return to normal position? If the pedal returned (or if you can return it using your toe), try applying the pedal again. You can feel the tension on the brake cable when it's working properly. I believe the ratcheting sound is from the mechanism failing to "catch" the brake cable. You don't need a Mensa Ring on your finger to figure out whats going on.

Personally, if I had it to do all over again, I would just live with having to apply the brake twice (occaisionally). If the problem became consistant, then I might have it fixed.

Thanks for the info everyone.

FYI - when it jams to the floor it usually stays there until I hit the release.

Except for one time yesterday when it did jam to the floor and ratchet. Pulling the release made the pedal move, but did not turn off the light. I had to reapply the brake (it worked normally this time) then release the brake again and the light went off.
