Why no 3.73's?
Back to the original gearing issue.
I think a 3.73 or 4.10 would really help this truck . I would like to see both as option's in the future . I would opt for the 4.10.
I would put bigger rubber on it so I probably would end up aroud 3.73 anyway with the bigger tire's.
My truck has 3.55 ls & since they have announced that they were coming out with the Supercrew I stayed on the dealer's *** & Ford's *** following everything that was happening & paid extra attention to the gearing since I wanted at least a 3.73 ratio & I never heard even the slightest hint of a 3.73 even way at the beginning.
This is the only thing holding me back from putting larger tire's on with some different rim's. I think 3.55 is close to the limit with 265's . I want 285's real bad with maybe some Atlas,589's or some 143's,but I'm sceptical about loosing power, but when I see all of these truck's here with 285's on them it make's me drool.DAMMIT!!! I can feel myself caving in already just talking about it.

Yeah, 3.73 or 4.10's would be nice, they offer 3.73 on the expedition so what's the big deal? As for you guys beating up on the Chevys', I have a '99 1 ton extended van, 5.7 with 4.10 limited slip, great truck, no problems. Nothing wrong with the Ford offering, but the design could use an update. When I add another van in the spring, price will win.

I have to totally agree with you on the tire and gear issue. I have the 3.55ls and went with the 285 combo that I seen everyone was running. Well the power wasn't bad but everytime I would hit a incline the truck would shift in and out of OD constantly. I traded my 285's for 265's and feel that for me personally 265's are the limit on a 3.55. I have thought about getting a newer Ford and love the F150 body style but hate the gear. So the only thing I could do is find a 250LD, which are kinda hard to find.

To end the debate, I ordered my truck on 4/02. 2002 Lariat FX4 4.6 and when the dealer tried to put the 3.55 LS in, the order would not go through on the small V8. We found out that 3.73`s where the answer to the ORP / 4.6 combination.
So I can say for sure that the 3.73 LS is available on the 4.6 with the FX4 option. Not sure on other combinations but, I had no idea that they even offered 3.73 as no where on fords site did I see it as an option.
The Screw is a new model, improvments and additional options will be added as owner feedback / road testing reveal ways to improve on a already great product!

I bought my 2001 SCrew (2WD) in October '01. While I was in the process of looking I complained to the dealership owner about the lack of 3.73 availability. I also told him that a Chevy might be in my future instead of a Ford. After all was said and done he said he'd have the 3.73s installed before I took delivery.
Couldn't be happier with my new "puller" and the dealership.

I have to say, right now, I'm leaning towards the GMC 2500HD with 6.0 and 4.10. Has gobs of power and rides nice. Cab is not as big as a Screw, but bigger than my Scab.

I have priced out gear swaps to go along with my ideas of a 3in body lift and 35's. I have found that I can get gears front and rear with install kits for under 5 bills, but have no idea on labor and I expect that to be the expensive part. Plus if all that was going to happen I would try to scrap up the money to put in a real rear locker like the powertrax. I'm at the point I am tired of this truck and want to start over fresh.
My rims are the ever popular American Racing Baja in a 16x8 size. I should be kicked in the teeth for letting them stay on there for the winter. We have only had two occasions where they laid down salt and now they are white spotted and maybe pitted even after attempts to keep them clean. Oh well, not much I could've done to prevent it I guess.
Sorry I'm always long winded.

I really want to put the 4.10 on my truck, when I think about it I will call my dealer and ask them if they can do that and what the cost is from them. The only reason I would do it though them is for warrenty purposes.
Also another issue with a gear swap is the spedometer. It will be off by quite a bit at the higher speeds, another question for them is can it be computer corrected or is it corrected by using a diffrent gear in the spedo????
Anyone know that answer to this?

To respond to DCOVELL, yes the powertrain control module (PCM) contains information on tire size and axle ratio that is used to compute vehicle speed. This drives the speedometer, as well as determines shift points (in part). KYFordFreak might have been experiencing problems with shift points being off because of the bigger tires. At any rate, a Ford dealer (maybe other shops?) can change the settings in the PCM so that the vehicle speed is determined correctly. Perhaps 285 tires are more acceptable with a 3.55 axle if the PCM is updated accordingly.
As to why the 3.73 isn't offered with the 5.4L, I would bet it's because of CAFE. The 3.73 would lower the rated fuel economy, and Ford has to maintain a minimum fuel economy rating over all the vehicles it sells. With the 5.4L, Ford can keep its CAFE numbers higher by not offering an axle higher than a 3.73.
What is most interesting, however, is the fact that when I was shopping for my Screw, I couldn't find a 4.6L in dealer stock. Seems like Ford could also maximize CAFE if they didn't push the 5.4Ls so hard!

ssabin has a good point that I failed to mention. While my truck is a 97 and still has the VSS gear. The PCM still needs to read the speed for correct shift points. At the time of my 285's I had no idea that the VSS controlled my shift points or it would have been changed. In fact with the 265's I am not off by much (3mph at 70). I think if I was to drop a tooth from the OE 20 to a 19, I would actually over compensate and be going slower than what my guage reads.
On the new trucks having the PCM reprogrammed is the only way to go. Unless you buy Superlift's little box that hooks up to your tranny and recalibrates everything.
