The brakes on FSeries are engineered to stop more than the truck. It is not necessary in all cases to have trailer brakes. Obviously, stopping distances will increase and can be decreased with use of electric or surge trailer brakes. Trailer brakes will certainly increase the safety of your tow-rig. If it is over 3000 lbs it is probably a good idea to have trailer brakes. Even on 2500 to 3000 lbs loads, surge brakes make a big difference. Surge brakes are adjustable and when adjusted properly can actually make it feel like the trailer is helping to stop the truck....

I have alot of info on my web sight about towing with my 2X4 Supercrew. I tow trailers from a small utility trailer upto a 6000# 30' travel trailer. I only use the eletric brakes with my travel trailer. Surge brakes work good for lighter trailers. I have alot of other info there too.

check it out.
