I just had to have my rear differential replaced on my 2001 Super Crew truck.... it started howling really bad, and it turns out the pinion gears were shot and I had to have to whole thing rebuilt. I thought is was a freak thing, but now I know 3 other guys that had the same thing go bad. Anyone else out there have this problem? Anyone heard of a possible recall. I got screwed being over the warranty mileage, but I know some guys had to replace already around 20,000 miles... that just doesn't sound good.

mine whines, looks like there is a tsb out for it now, am checking on saturday, service manager said it was normal. Had the pinion seal replaced, hate the whine, know its not normal, have 19k on now.

 

Shouldn't we get notifications on things like this??? from Ford.

 

My Boss had to have his rear end replaced in his SCrew this fall. They told him the clutch disc went out in his L.S rear end. It whined for a while before he took it in for a look. Cost him about $1500

There are three different sizes or rear differentials that can be fitted depending on whether it's a 4.2L, 4.6L, 5.4L or whether it's a 7,700 Lb payload package. From the Ford specifications document I've got, it states 3,800 Lb rating for the 4.2L & 4.6L, 4,200 Lbs for the 5.4L and 5,300 Lbs for the 7,700 Lb payload package.

The 3,800 Lb axle has a ring gear pitch diameter size of 8.80"
The 4,200 " " 9.75"
The 5,300 " " 10.25"

With all that said, which axle are you guys saying is experiencing problems? Is it all of them or just the small 3,800 Lb axle used in the 4.2L and 4.6L equiped trucks?

I'm interested in knowing which axle is problematic.

I have a 2001 F150 15500 miles standard cab long bed. 4.6 with a 7700 lb. tow package with the small radiator. My rear end wines like hell. Especially over 65. Hope this info helps. I will be calling the dealer in the am.

 

Had my complete rear end replaced at 26,000 mi. By complete I mean gears , housing everything.

 

Had a high pitched at 55+ mph. If I let off the gas or put the tranny in neutral, it disappeared. Thought it was normal since others had mentioned this same whinning sound. Now that I read about it in this forum, it's sounding like it was abnormal. Don't have the truck anymore, though.

My '01 SCr is quiet so far. Hope I don't have the kinds of problems you guys are having.

How many miles did you have on the truck when you first noticed the problem?

 

I would also like to know what rear end you guys are experiencing problems with. Mine doesn't make any noise now, but its good to know about a couple of years down the road.
