I just got some Gibson Headers

I just installed a set of Gibson headers on my 2001 5.4L screw. I have done lots of auto mechanic work in the past and have a fair amount of experience. Here are some pointers. This is a 4-5 hour job and air tools are an absolute must in my opinion. I can not even imagine attempting this job without an air ratchet. You will need several extensions varying from 2 inches up to 18" or so to remove the two exaust flange bolts on either side. You will need a 5mm 1/4 drive socket to remove the existing studs. I could not have done the job without a 3/8 universal joint as well. You need lots of patience and strong small coordinated hands. Finally the real killer is attaching the EGR tube to the driver side header. You need a 1-1/4" 12 point box end drop down wrench modified into a flare nut wrench. The drop down or offset wrench i used was about 1-1/2" offset. Then you take your trusty Dremel tool and cut a slot in your new $30 wrench. This is an absolute must as there is positively no way to get to the nut to tighten it without this type of wrench. The install was a real pain but hey, now its done and i love the new power and performance.

Hey reueld,

Man, you're really digging in to deap subjects early in your membership, on your second post no less, but that's a good thing.

Got any pics of this mod? I would consider doing it but at this point I'm not sure why I'd do it. Years ago, I was unable to own a vehicle without a high performance exhaust system just out of mere principle. Not sure now but the sound and better fuel economy would be my only reason that I can justify now.

reueld,

I just landed on your island and discovered you install headers on your Screw, where did you get them and how much did they cost. What kind of exhaust do you have beyond the headers too?

Thanks for the post!

More Header info

I got the headers at Summit and i think they were $460. Naturaly they are stainless steel. I don't recall if there was a choice but i am a big fan of stainless anyway. So far i have retained the factory exaust as i do not want any more noise in the cab. I will post again when i get a handle on wether or not my gas milage changes any. Gibson reccomends the single exaust for best street performance. The dual exaust stuff sounds good but lowers the back pressure too much and you lose the scavanging affect. I am also going to post pics of the special tool you need to tighten the EGR fitting.

Okay reueld,

We've got company and I guess you don't like to cut up much. That's okay, I just need to know and I can be as serious as the next guy.
