Trailer Brakes
Trailer Brakes
I just purchased a 2001 Super Crew. I was wiring up my trailer, which has electric brakes, and I'm trying to find info on how the brake system works in the truck. The truck came wired for it.
The hardest part for me while wiring my my Scrw to pull my trailer was drilling the holes in the dash to mount the electronic brake unit.
I wasnt so much figuring the mounting position but actually bringing the drill to the dash that was only days old.
After that is was a matter of plugging in the brake control to the very convienent plug under the dash.
It was a 10 minute job including clean up & it works great.
By the way the Screw seems to pull my trailer much better than my Dodge Ram ever did.
good luck

Get the Tekonsha 9055 SENTINEL BRAKE CONTROL. Its about 80 bucks or so. It is by far the best. It has a internal inertia pendulim and works awesome. My friends and I tow race cars (5000 - 10000 lbs) and this has proven to be the smoothest on the market.
Its plugs right in just drill some holes.

I agree with the previous posts. It is a simple installation.
I was curious if any of you guys who tow are getting any spark knocking. I have the 4.6l, 2wd. I recently took the truck into due to spark knocking on acceleration in general and while towing. They said they updated the code in the computer (my build date is 11/2000) and the day to day driving has improved. Occasionally I still hear it but it is better. This past weekend I towed my travel trailer and the spark knocking is still there towing. It is a light spark knock but it can be heard and worries me that I am shortening the life of my engine. I for one don't think that it should ever spark knock and that something must be wrong but I feel like they are going to be unable to help me.
So, spark knocking anyone??

Trailer Brakes
I have trailer brakes on my Screw. As I recall, there are instructions that come with the owner's manual for hooking up the brakes when you buy the towing package. Its pretty easy. There is a plug under the dash near the steering column. Just plug the brake controller into it.
The only other thing I needed to do was switch my 6 pin plug on my trailer to a seven pin to fit the receptacle at the hitch.

Spark Knocking
I have a 4.6 XLT 4X4. I tow a two horse trailer that totals about 5k pounds when loaded. Never had a problem with knocking or towing this load. Build date was February 2001.

4.6supercrew,
Nothing? No pinging of any kind? I am getting some just driving around under certain acceleration conditions. It isn't loud knocking but it can be heard. I would describe it as light pinging. It was doing it plenty when towing. I have been over to the engines board and read through tons of posts on the subject with most being older F150s.
I guess I'll be taking it back.

Racer70--trailer brakes
Draw-Tite makes a controller that has digital readout of amps going to trailer brakes, has adjustment to control how fast and how hard brakes are applied and can be mounted in any position.
Also dig readout tells you if elec conns are screwed up. About $99
Works with 1,2 or 3 axles. About the size of 2 pks cigs. On the Fords, its plug and play.
