Tranmission problem?
Tranmission problem?
Has anyone had problems with their transmission? My truck has started to buck between 40 - 50 mph when I am going at a steady rate of speed. I first thought it was water in the fuel and it might have froozen since I live in NH but it did it on a warm day also. I had a the same problem with a escort that I had and it was the transmission had trouble shifting down after dropping down in speed. This problem doesn't happen every time so I know if I was to bring it do the dealership they probably would see the problem (Do they ever). Anyone have any suggestions?
My Supercrew transmission lost reverse at 3,000 miles. Truck build date 8/00. Turns out it was a bad weld from the factory on what they called a planetary gear. It didn't look like a planetary gear - more like a large bowl with a 2.5" diameter gear attached (or in this case, not attached) to the bottom. The point is this: When I took it in it really seemed to suprise the service agent. When I went back in to pick it up, I described the problem to another service agent. He was suprised too, and his comment was "Boy, of all the problems we have on trucks, that is not one of them". Made me think the transmissions are not a common trouble area with the Supercrews/F-150's.
From the short description, it sounds to me like your problem could be anything. Even fuel injection or sensor wiring can cause some kinds of surging/bucking. Good Luck

Transmission trouble
I had to have the transmission replaced on my Screw at 9K miles. The first sign of trouble was that it would not engage reverse easily. You would put the indicator to "R" but the truck would not go. Suddenly Reverse would engage but the truck sounded like you were dragging a bunch of junk.
Before I could get it to the dealer, the entire drive train froze. No neutral or anything. Ford paid for the tow it and provided me with a loaner during the time it was in the shop. That was 2,000 miles ago and everything has been fine since.
If you do get stuck somewhere, be sure to call their 800 number for roadside service (its in your owner's info). If you do this, your tow will be paid for.

This vibration, does it make any noise? would you compare it to driving on a rumble strip?
If it does you are in luck....because its likely to be a very simple and rather cheap fix.
Ford rear wheel drives are known for moisture build up in the torque converter, which causes the converter to shudder. This can be eliminated by simply flushing the transmission fluid. ***This does not mean dropping the pan*** you truck has approx. 13 quarts of fluid in the trans and dropping the pan only removed about 5. Have your local dealer do a trans flush, and if they have it make sure they add the shudder guard.
This should only cost about $120-160.00

Might want to check something else too. I thought I had a tranny problem as well, mine was acting similar to what you described. Bucking at speed, not constantly doing it, no clear origin for the symptoms. Turned out to be a coil pack that went bad. It was going out and then one day the dummy light came on and the truck started running like it was on 4 cylinders, which it kinda was. Might want to take a look at that as well. Dont ask me how to check them though, I'm still learning my truck, only had it about 6 months now but I love it.
Sounds to me like a bad Coil Pack (COP-Coil On Plug). You've got an ignition coil on every spark plug and these are know to fail on occasion. I had to replace the #4 COP at around 50,000 miles. The truck was bucking when accelerating slowly from around 50mph. If I mashed the gas it went away. Now I have 76,000 miles and I think I have another one going bad because the bucking is back.

Mine does it too and I have not a clue as to the cause.
