Quality Problems With New '01 KR Screw
I think you should talk to a lawyer. It seems to me that in a way they sold you a used (damaged ) truck without notifying you of it. Seems like they could be brought up on fraud charges. Maybe this will get them to give you a new truck. If not you should insist on getting an additional extended warranty at no cost.
Daveman,
I just looked at my hood and it looks like I have the same problem that you do with the rag job done to the edge of the hood. It looks like yours has a little bit more metal showing but my definitely has it too. I feel so dumb for not looking after your original post.
I also have some of those white spots under the hood. I noticed some white spots on my bumper. I wonder if it was caused by the white crud on the hood (I am pretty sure that I washed all of the car washing soap off last weekend).
I am going in to the dealership tomorrow and see what they have to say.
I wish that I had a digital camera so that I could post some pictures.

Hey Art,
I guess you would have been pushing your luck to ask for a new truck and a $1000 digital camera so you could spread the good news about how well Ford treated you with your first KR with the bad engine, "A"?
Congratulations BTW on your new truck. I may have said it already but I guess it won't hurt to say it more than once.
Talk to ya later,
DaveMan

My hood has the same problems under the front lip. Very rough and unprofessional in IMHO. Also have same thng in other areas of the truck - rear driver door. Rear driver door also hitting cab. Seems as though there are some alignment problems.
BTW, I just received a notice from the dealer today that my new radiator had just arrived. It is:
identified as follows: FOYL3Z-8005-GA Rad Asy - 1 row 36.
This after having complained about the 1.02" radiator in my tow package equipped SCrew. Is this the 1.42" radiator part #?
I also had them replace my General tires wich came with the truck - very poor quality, had multiple problems withthe sidewalls. They were replaced with same size Goodyears.
I want to also replace my Premium stereo w/6disc CD changer. Garbage!

DAVEMAN,
FYI, not sure if this is legal or not, but my father is good friends with the owner of a dealer and he told us one time that if the repairs are under a certain dollar amount (I think it was $750), they are not obligated to tell the purchaser about the repairs.

Okay guys,
This time you’re probably wondering if I'm bragging or complaining. Believe you me, I'm complaining. I was at my dealer yesterday and was having both of my new Wrangler AT/Ss tires mounted on the rear, long story but while the truck was up on the rack, I noticed some additional paint problems that I had missed before. This looks so obvious now but if you are not looking for them you can't see them.
Either way, this has totally pissed me off and they will either fix the problems or I'm going to the next level and seek the help of an attorney. I will probably add this stuff to the thread I already started about Ford’s Super Crew quality going to hell. How could someone doing this kind of crappy work sleep at night knowing that some sucker is going to end up with his handy work?
Here are the links to the photos that I’m reluctant to show but somehow I’m hoping that by bringing this to light that Ford will do something here. Plus you guys can look and check yours to make sure this is not a problem with many trucks.

Opinions and comments are welcomed. Be easy on me though for not finding the additional problems until now, I guess I’ll never give Ford the benefit of the doubt again before I spend hours looking under something before I buy it.
But you know, even if I would have found the problems before taking delivery, the dealer would have told me the same thing, we’ll fix anything that you find is unacceptable to you and that goes for almost any part of the truck. With all what the dealers tell us, then why should we be pissed? I guess it’s just our expectations are too high for the first impressions to be anything less than spectacular quality.
Do you want to know what really bothers me more than the flaws in my truck? While I was waiting at the dealership yesterday, they were auctioning off a 2002 Thunderbird and man is that car beautiful and the fit/finish is immaculate and that goes for the inside as well as the outside. I noticed that the MSRP on the ride is only a couple thousand more than my KR, yet you couldn’t find a single flaw in the paint or for the whole car for that matter.
BTW the beginning bid started at MSRP, which was over $39k. My contact at the dealer told me there were at least 8 people who wanted the same car and that is what sparked the auction in the first place. The dealer was expecting to get offers of well over $45k. Now, to get to the part that bothers me. Why the hell should the owner of a $37.5k KR truck have to deal with paint issues like the ones I’ve had to deal with.
The trucks must have a hell of a lot of profit in them if Ford can deliver 10 times the inside and outside quality on a 2002 Thunderbird and let the paint as well as a lot of other quality features fall short of exceptional.
FYI, I also posted this same exact message over in the King Ranch Forum under the pinstripe coverup thread.

Guys,
I was at my Ford dealer yesterday and they started getting a list of items together to start repairs on all my concerns. I have a couple of questions to ask.
1. If you had a choice to let the dealer fix the loose stud holding in my center console or to just leave it alone, which one would you choose and why?
My concern is that they will for sure have to completely remove my transfer case and transmission and remove some sort of insulation over the tranny to get to the loose stud. I'm afraid there might be more problems later with all the disassembly/re-assembly with them trying to re-weld that stud. In addition, the stud is spot welded to the sheet metal on the transmission tunnel on the floor board and all the heat that will need to be added will probably cause some more damage. Crap, decisions decisions, I hate it that I have to choose. Why wouldn't Ford just want to get this truck back and fix it right and teach someone that this kind of crap is just unacceptble for top notch F-150s.
2. The hood paint problems that you have seen on the first post in this thread is disgusting. Would you just let it go as is or have the whole hood repainted and why?
My dealer's paint shop manager told me yesterday that in order to properly fix the damage, the entire hood must be removed and the whole thing needs to be repainted.
In order to fix all the problems with my truck, I'm looking at leaving it with them for a week if not weeks. My dealer has free rentals for long term repairs and actually I think they have free rentals for any repair that must be left overnight.
3. What would you guys do about the rental? Would you insist on a vehicle of similar configuration or just take whatever was offered.
I guess I could always as for a KR and go from there, "A".

I wasn't so sure before, but I am now convinced your truck has a sorted past. I looked mine over pretty close before i bought because i am in and out of manufacturing and auto assembly plants at least once a week. My job involves automotive body panels and I guess I see stuff from a mile away. Daveman, your truck was either damaged and repaired at the plant or at the dealer....I suspect it was at the dealer.
The factory lower accent beige goes all the way past the running board and in fact goes to the very edge of the rocker panel where it ends under the vehicle. I am 95% confident it would not leave kansas City looking like that, if they repaired it they would have done a better job. And those scratches and scrapes would never leave the factory.
BTW, keep in mind that the hood paint problem you have may be a separate unrelated issue....don't tie them together as you are making your case or it might give them an opening to dive at. Treat them as two problems. Man, I feel bad for you.

Hey logical,
I just went out and looked at my rocker panels real close, again. It really doesn't look like there was ever any damage, it truly looks like the paint job was done by a drunk or someone that was just incompetent or it got screwed up and somehow and slipped through the cracks and was missed.
The trim color is all the way to the bottom of the rocker panel everywhere on the driver's side, but is only under the rear door on the passenger's side. From the running board lights all the way to the front fender, the trim color is very poorly done and does not go to the bottom of the rocker panel at all but the base color is there and looks original.
To me, it just looks like someone either just totally missed that area with the trim color or it got wiped off somehow due to runs or something and they forgot to go back and fix it. There were little bits and pieces of masking tape on both driver and passenger sides and some of them were more than an inch long. I'd like to agree with you that the truck was damaged but it just doesn't look that way from my inspection.
Do you know the actual procedure that is performed when painting a truck like a KR screw with the two tone paints?
Do they paint the base color everywhere first and then come back and do the trim or is it the opposite or maybe even something else?
Also, do you have time to answer the other questions about the entire hood being painted, console weld stud repair and the rental that I would have to drive while the beast in being repaired?
Lastly, do have any contacts at Ford that you can tell about my problems or direct them to this forum and let them see what I've got here, or maybe a contact at the Ford assembly plant in Kansas City?
I would think if Ford could see what I'm posting that they would want to just give me a new '02 KR truck and for me to have all links to this stuff I've been posting to disappear.
Your continued help in this matter is most definitely appreciated.

In response to the console thing, it depends on how loose it is, IMHO. If is being held well by the 3 other studs, and doesn't rattle or move when you open it , etc. I would leave it. I would not want the shop monkeys screwing with around my transfer case, tranny, fuel lines, brake lines, turbo boost accuator plungers and afterburner ignitors, with the hope that they would reinstall them properly.
As far as the rental, be happy that they give you anything. After you drive a '74 El Camino for a week you'll appreciate your KR more. I would not hassle them about getting your truck back ASAP. Trust me on this one. I wrecked a '97 expy, rolled the thing end over end and side to side. Every panel had damage, including the roof. The problem was the truck was leased, and no way did I want Ford to ding me on this thing when I returned the truck. I told the body shop manager about the lease thing, explained to him that I was going to drop the truck off, not bug him about getting it done quickly, etc. It paid off. When I got it out of the shop it was better than new. I told the sales manager after he inspected the truck at lease end about the accident and he was very impressed with the repair work.
Those paint pics are scary. I'm checking mine in the morning (cringe)
Sorry for the length.

Hey BroncoDave,
Not to get too far off the subject, but you brought back some fond old memories from around the early '70s.
I wouldn't be so fast to put down a '74 El Camino. My best friend's dad had a late '60s El Camino, probably '68, '69 or maybe even a '70, anyhow that thing was cool as hell and I mean quick too, real quick. He had a high performance 327 that he custom built in that babe with a muncie rock crusher transmission and a 4.10 posi-traction differential in the rear. Of course he used all the regular goodies, headers, custom cam shaft, hi-rev lifters, four bolt mains, aluminum hi-rise intake............must I go on?
My friend's dad used to take us to their lake house in that bad boy and he would show us just what it would do. He used to stand still and just smoke the tires to the point you couldn't see anything. Next he would let it get sideways and then go from side to side sliding and I don't mean in the mud, I'm talking old country rock road here with 50 series tires with deep tread.
Anyhow, I think I'm startin' to recall where my hot rod instincts were developed. I must have been around 11 or 12 years old when that was going on. My friend's dad was a master boat mechanic and built engines for racing tunnel boats as well as a general boat engine mechanic. He knew everything about IC engines no matter where it was used or how it worked. I think he was my major inspiration to become a mechanic and get into cars like nobody's business, at least back then. At that time, I was not interested in becoming an Engineer like my Dad. My dad is a civil Engineer and to me that was boring, I like machinery and going fast. I took his advice on the Engineering thing at the tender age of 23 and started my life all over again, but that's really a whole different story.
Amazing what just mentioning a single car model and an era can conjure up, "A". Sorry to drag on..................couldn't be helped.
Thanks for the sympathetic words about my truck.
PS I sure hope yours doesn't turn out bad!

Daveman,
Really sorry to hear about your problems...... You may be able to find out what happened by visiting another Ford Dealer and asking them to check the service record on your VIN#. If the dealer did body work on your truck, it should show up.
I wouldn't even tell them why you want to see it, you could even tell them that you are working a deal with an individual on it and want to check.
The hood painting, I have found that the factory paint holds up much better regarding road chips. If they repaint, make sure they use a paint hardener, it helps a tremendous amount with road chips.
On the rental, not many dealers carry as many rentals as they could use for overnight service (overhead). I would take what they offer... however, look on the used car lot... maybe they have a Lightning you could drive for a few days.....
If you can't get the service check from another dealer... let me know and I will try....
I talked to my friend, said if it is under $500, it won't show up and that even if it is more, they may not have put body work on the system. He said if it was damaged, it is likely that it happened in transit.
Sorry....

Okay guys/gals,
I took my Screw to my dealer today to start the long awaited repairs. I'm driving a, dealer provided, red Taurus as my primary mode of transportation. They are going to replace the rear bumper plastic step cover as it has some smeared sort of black tar on it from the factory. They are going to re-paint the entire hood due to lack of quality on the front leading edge.
Next, they removed my center console and called me and asked if repairing the broken stud would be acceptable if they re-welded it from the top instead of on the bottom as Ford designed it to be. I told them to go ahead and don't cover it up until I can see it and be happy with the repairs. They told me they were removing both front seats and were going to roll the carpet back to do the welding. Sounds like some kind of facial surgery where your face is cut and folded back over your head, yuck! There’s nothing worse than knowing that your ride has endured that much crap with a little more than 1000 miles on the bitch, except maybe having to walk to work, just kidding, I know it can always be worse but I got to bitch about something.
They will re-paint the rocker panel trim under the passenger's side door to factory specs, whatever that may be.
I gave them three part numbers for different kinds of HD radiators and so far they have not indicated that they will not install a bigger one for me.
As far as the front headlight bezel, I don't think there's much they can do short of a new fender and grill and it doesn't look bad enough for me to request that.
I'll keep you posted on the progress.
