2002 Screw FX4 Test Drive
I just got back from test driving and almost buying a 2002 FX4 Screw Lariat. The dealer told me this was a limited edition, anyone heard of that? I was wondering about the price, he only wanted to go 4% above invoice because it is such a hot seller. I told him I thought I could get an x plan through the airplane club I have heard so much about on this site, but he didn't really believe me. X Plan price was $31800. Does that sound right. He was also screwing me on the trade in. This was at Middlekauf Ford in Plano and I think I might look around some more. Any suggestions? How long does it take to get the x plan through the airplane club?

Hey guy,
From my understanding, you can get maybe a couple hunderd dollars below invoice using x plan. The incintives may be different at the point of sale but that is probably unknown until the deal is struck.
As far as your trade goes, IMO any time you buy a vehicle at or below invoice, you are very rarely going to get a penny over wholesale value for it and maybe even less. The dealer has to do that 'cause since they are selling you the vehicle at bottom dollar and they have nothing to hide behind as far as juggling numbers and keeping you guessing as to what the he// is going on. Either dump you present ride on the open market for retail of eat crow and smile. Besides, if you have to eat crow you can probably finance the upside down amount, if you are upside down, in with a real low interst rate loan.
I think you have lots of company with your situation and my guess is it's the majority of us that have walked in those same shoes.
As far as EAA, I think that's a good deal and I'm gonna join 'cause I'm an aviation buff plus seems like I've been buying my fare share of new vehicles in the past three years. All bets are that the x plan process works fairly quickly with EAA but I'm sure they can give you the details on that.

I figured that some of you might want to know a little about the test drive. Nice truck. It seems bigger but isnt. It does sit taller though. Ride is the same as the 2001 I have test driven. A minor change I did like was the electronic airconditioning system. No dials, just set the temp, hit automatic, and it keeps it the right temp. The sales guy actually let me take if off road, and it was pretty smooth. He even let me get is a little muddy, and damn it was good looking dirty. I like the knew wheels on the FX4, they are bigger and wider. It also has a more aggressive looking tire on it. Pretty much the same truck with a few added features. The one I drove was the new grey color and I liked it. Interior was the medium graphite leather. Kinda drab inside, but still looks good.
Thanks DaveMan. My girlfriend's dad owns a finance car lot and said I should draw the line on the black book wholesale value of the 4Runner, which happens to be $3500 over what he initially offered. I did get him up another $3000 on the value and will give me X plan if I prove to him I can get it. (duh)
Hey lookin4ascrew,
I guess since you are new you did not have chance to see this yet. I posted it a week or so ago.

Refer to the two links found on the first page of the thread the above link takes you to.
This info should clear up the confussion the dealer laid on you. The dealers are sadly in need of some sharp sales staff everywhere. My dealer doesn't even try to tell me anything on a truck 'cause they know I have looked at the info and specs, searched the web and have determined 10 times more than they ever cared to. They just want to make the sale and don't care how they get there. IMO, they should be factory trained and should be able to spit out the exact info. The dealer principals should ensure that sales crew are competent by making them take tests to esnure complete understanding of what they are selling, or is it peddling?

Hi,
I do not understand why the 2002 cooling system specification chart says that the 1.42 radiator has the same fluid capacity as the 1.02 radiator. Is the 23.9 qts for both a typo or ford just plainly have not been able to cover the mess up right?, any of you guys have an explanation? because other charts have 25.5 qts for th 1.42 radiator. Thanks.

I just got my x plan from EAA. Easy to do. I signup on their website, www.eaa.org on Saturday and got onto the website on Tuesday. Got my pin for the Xplan right after that. Very easy, now I just have to find a place to spend it.
