Unhappy Why did this happen to me?!?

The other day I was at a stop light when a Soccer Mom pulls up next to me in an Eddie Bauer Expedition. We are on a limited access 4 lane highway out in the country, no traffic at all. Light turns green, she floors it (I guess) I floor it, she just walks away from me like it was nothing! What I don't get is, I have a Superchip, Cat-back duals(Raven Z55), K-N Filter, Modified airbox and I only use Texaco premium. As she was passing me I noted that she had factory exhaust, wasn't loud and made no strange whining sounds(supercharger). Why,why, why??? To make matters worse she pulled into the Toys-R-Us as pulled into the next Gas Station to make sure everything was still plugged in! By the way I have the 5.4L so she couldn't have a bigger engine.

hmmm...sounds like you got one of the "slow" 5.4 F150s - haha. Better trade it in for a Lightning...

Similar experience following an F350 PSD dually down an onramp, I had it floored and he was pulling away from me. I have 5.4 w/ 3.73. I definitely thought mine should be faster than a SuperDuty with a PSD!!!

You bought a truck ...

What???? You let a woman beat you

I have a '01 Expy, EB, 5.4, 2wd and a '01 S'crew Lariat, 5.4, 4x4. Both are stock all the way. I believe they both have the 3.55 LS. I am sure about the LS but not about the gear ratio. I have not raced either one, but I can tell the Expy is faster. It also drives a lot easier than the S'crew. I have never felt a steering as easy to turn as the Expy at low speeds. The turning radius of the Expy is also smaller.

They both seem to be built well and I like to drive both vehicles. They just are not the same.

IMO...

I just bought a 2001 Screw 4x4 with the 5.4. I also have a 1998 Lincoln Navigator with the 5.4.

The Nav seems much quicker. Might be the rear diff difference.
Also I noticed the nav shifts a little different, seems like the screw is taking off in second gear.

Regardless of the take off power I bet they can tow the same.

a) she has a taller gear ratio

b) premium gas has less energy per gallon

c) the net effect of you mods is a decrease in power... easy to do... especially with the exhaust... you lose scavening properties and you suffer.

d) she's got a faster foot.

Yes, because the compounds used to increase octance (MTBE) have less energy per unit volume and there is more MTBE in premium gasoline than in regular. However, the same also holds true for methanol and ethanol octane boosters.

Energy Content Heat of Vaporisation Oxygen Content
Nett MJ/kg MJ/kg wt%
Methanol 19.95 1.154 49.9
Ethanol 26.68 0.913 34.7
MTBE 35.18 0.322 18.2
ETBE 36.29 0.310 15.7
TAME 36.28 0.323 15.7
Gasoline 42 - 44 0.297 0.0

What was the temperature outside

The reason I ask is, I have read, here on the website,
I think the title was Hot Weather hesitation solved.
It was posted ny terry w 123.

He found that a defective D.P.F.E. valve lets the EGR valve open too wide and the truck falls on its face, It's get up and go, got up and went.
I have that same problem, I spoke to the people at Ford and they said maybe. Oh by the way, there is no code in the computer for this problem..
Good luck

But having her beat you, would have been a great ice breaker to start talking to her, who knows???

Regardless which has more 'energy content' the 5.4 with the chip w/92 octane should should run stronger than the same engine on the stock program with 87. I have no idea why you lost, but I don't think your 'enery content; was the problem

It was hot outside, high 80's to low 90's. What bothers me is that my truck has to be lighter, the motors at least has to be the same(hers could have been a 4.6), the outside temp was the same for both of us, we both had our air on(unless she was a masochist). But like I said she just up and left me....I don't even know if she was racing. I hope she was. In any case it wasn't subtle. By the way my truck was running good that day, or so I thought.

You sure it wasn't a Navigator?

I believe the Navigator has a 32-Valve 5.4L and also the 4r100 transmission.

Nope

It was an Eddie Bauer Expy. Red and Tan from what I could tell under the dirt.

Hey 1meanking,

Like your call name.

My guess is that the X was not stock. Most folks that are willing to race anything usually have made changes to improve likelyhood of winning. How many soccer moms you ever heard of that are up for racing? If she new she had something hot under the hood, then she would be likely to participate in a match.

If I were to modify my engine to run better than stock, I would probably not modify the exterior for anyone to notice (sleeper, as it used to be called).

In my hot roding days, I would have changed carburation, camshafts, gearing, done transmisson mods, torque converter and the works but no one could tell cause it looked stock on the outside.
Only way you could tell was after I showed you what my tail lights looked like, with a little burnt rubber smell too.

I think your assumption of that X being stock is a unjustified, especially since you didn't find out what was under the hood, could be a lighting engine for all you know. Either she was cranked or your setup is not optimized cause IMO there shouldn't be much difference between an X and the screw, but hey I been wrong before.

My $0.02

DaveMan
