Question Advance Cover Tonneau

Has any put an Advance Cover hard tonneau cover on their '01 SC? I've been looking to get one like this on my truck 'cause I think it will suit my needs (hard cover, multi-access, easy off/on). The K-cover looks like it's the Advance Cover under their name.

I don't like the clamshell designs for the access restictions.

Any comments/suggestion?

Thanks!

Thumbs up Advance Cover on SCrew

I've installed the Advance Cover on my2001 SCrew. Attached is a link to the Albums on the site with some photos.

It all depends on what you want the cover to do. I like it. It suits my needs perfectly. Lockable. Easy to open/close. Easy to take off (less than 2 mins by myself). Cost $500 in Houston, TX. Installed myself. I haven't had an issue with any access restrictions? I've used it to haul lumber, boxes, etc. both open and closed.
Let me know if you have any specific questions and I'll give you my $0.02 worth.

I to have been very pleased with my cover. I like the low profile look that blends in with lines of the truck, and the versatility the cover offers. So far the cover has been water tight but we havent had much rain since i have installed it. The only gripe i had with the cover is that it had a couple of scratches in the paint when it was shipped to my dealer, but nothing that a little black touch up paint didnt correct.

I think they claim this thing can be painted to match. My truck has beige railcaps and i thing a black top would not look so good. Has anybody painted one of these...or a K-cover?

Are there exposed seals that would have to stay black and make it look goofy painted?

NoVaSC, Logical,
I believe K-Cover is the Advance Cover distributor in the Houston area. That's where I purchased mine.

Logical,
Regarding painting, look at the photos in my earlier post. The cover doesn't cover the black bed rail on your truck. Also, there is a hard black piece of moulding on the outside edge (about 3/8" thick) that would be hard to paint. Also, the hinge is covered by a strip of rubber. If painted, it probably would chip and peel. Don't know for sure, I'm ont a paint expert. Anyone else know for sure?

My opinion, I like the gloss black. Looks good with the "black" glass on the rear window, black tires, black step bars, black accents on the truck.....

Hi Logical,

I am in the same boat with you. I have beige rails and I am unsure what to do for a lid. I would love to hear what you decide.

Hey guys,

I found a place semi-locally that will install the AdvanceCover. They are Cap World in Gaitherburg, MD. However they want $699.00 (which includes painting to match truck color) plus $100.00 for installation. That's $800.00!!!
Is this normal, or is this too much?

Another thing - I noticed on the AdvanceCover web-site that they say the SC cover is drill-less. Strongwind - you say you installed it yourself. How difficult was it?

Thanks for responses!

Logical,

Take a look at a Snug lid... completely covers the colored bed rails and fits very very well... better than the low rider.

Cover installation

NoVaSC,

The cover wasn't real difficult to install. The most time consuming thing for me was installing the seals/gaskets. Took 2 1/2 to 3 hrs. I tend to "measure twice, cut once" in most of the things I do.

Some of the Advance covers for other trucks were "drill-less" models. The SCrew was not at the time I bought it. May have changed. You can see in the photos that I had to drill two small holes on each side for the hinge bracket. Blind riveted in place. No big deal. The bars for the locks on the corners clamp into place. The whole assembly is pretty damn sturdy.

$699 for the cover seem high to me. I guess that's $500 for the cover, $199 for paint. $100 for installation is probably about right. Figure $50/hr for the installer (dealer keeps 50%)?

Here's the hinge that's attached to the bed rails with two rivets. the only holes required under my installation.

photo of hinge attachment to the bed

Let's try this.
Here's the photo of the hinge clamp for the Advance cover on my SCrew. Two small rivet holes in the side of the bed rail.

Hope this helps.

StrongWind,

Saw your picture. Looks like a good job.

I was going to set up an appointment with the "local" dealer. However, I called them today and they don't want to carry AdvanceCover anymore. They say they have had too many returns due to the cover leaking. Have you had this problem?

Check out the Leer 700 series, They have really come up with
a nice lid. It curvers to match the hood. It covers all the bed cap.
It is easy to take off, easy to open and close, comes standard
with the under side carpet/ Looks great. In Atlanta I paid
$700.00 painted to match and installed.

NoVaSC,

I haven't had any trouble with the cover leaking. They don't advertise it as being "watertite". However, it hasn't leaked on me yet. The only time I got water in the bed with the cover on was when I used a high pressure sprayer around the sides of the tailgate. Not related to the cover. I live in Houston, so it's seen its fair share of rain. Also, I take it through the "premium" drive thru car wash once a week and haven't experienced any water in the bed with it on. There are a few others on the boards that have the cover and I don't recall any of them having any significant trouble with leaking. Anyone else want to comment?

I looked at the roll top also. My neighbor has one. After a year, his started leaking and won't stop. He is looking to replace it with something else. Also, on the SCrew, the roll can takes up quite a bit of space in the bed, IMO.

I've attached a photo of the cover on my truck.
