bugsdoc1,
If you are reffering to hard tonneau's, I just got the LEER 700 series hard tonneau installed on my 2001 SCREW. The LEER does not cover the black bed rail covers 100%. At first I didn't like it, but it is growing on me now.

So tell me, if you want to haul a bunch of crap in the back how much work would it be to take the top off and then back on again. Can this be done with 2 people or would you need more???

I have never owned a topper and sometimes carry very expensive PA/audio gear in the back and with the top I would be able to keep it locked up, etc.

But sometimes, I do use the bed to dump runs and other things.

So again, how difficult is it to take those things on and off???

I just had an Astro topper installed a couple days ago. It looks like a Snugtop or ARE topper. It's painted to match, has a headliner, sport rack on top, curved glass door with pushbutton latch and swing out side windows with screens. I don't have a photo yet, but here is their website.http://www.astro-cap.com/

Question

Don't believe for one moment you got 21 mpg just because a topper was installed.

Tonneau Covers

Tried to order a "remodeled" Leer 700 series,'over-the-rail' cover, but was told availability not until March/April. I like the Leer model 700 because it comes with the liner (at my dealer in No Cal); has a single handle to open/close; latches when closed , but not locked; cheaper than Snug;same warranties

Topper cost $1400, Snugtop XTR, all bells and whistles included in price. This topper is only made for Screws and Nison Frontiers. The only thing I do not like about topper is using cargo cage. It hits the hydraulic rams for window of topper. Have to release cage from sides then flip out.

I can not believe the MPG I'm hearing on the board...I'm got a 2001 Screw 5.4 w/ ARE Z cap and never got over 14 MPG city and 16 MPG HWY.

You guys sure your not going downhill in nuetral?!?!?!?

I'm confused!!

Love my truck and really don't care too much about MPG but I am curious on all these high MPG's.

Peace!

Thumbs up Truck Caps

I have installed an A.R.E. MX cap on my Estate Green KR, it sits about 5" higher than the cab of the truck. I wanted this so that I would have more room inside if I needed it, plus I figured if I had a cover the same height as the cab it would look like an expedition. I also installed a bedrug & I love them both. I have the factory box extender which my wife loves for groceries, but you it will not flip out with the topper.

Truck Caps

I have yet to see an increase in gas mileage since my topper was installed. I have 2000 miles on it and hope to see it get a little better as I put a few more on it. It should improve as the spring gas formula starts arriving, or so I'm told. That and the fact I won't be running the heated seats and heater and that will give the alternator a break. Here is a picture of the Astro topper on my S'crew. $1500 installed. Notice the lack of snow in the background. Winter has forgotten us here in the midwest. Too bad! haha

Century Topper Experience

I bought a Century Ultra series for my 01 Screw. Paid $1050 from the American Shell Cntr in Arlington, TX. Overall the topper suits it's purpose but I'm a disapointed with the fit. This is my 2nd Century topper from the same dealer. One thing that dealer said that sold me on the Century for my Screw was Century is 1 of 2 topper manufacturers that bakes the paint to the fiberglass. The Ultra series has the "wraparound" fiberglass that fits over the bed rails so the topper looks intergrated into the bed. I would strongly suggest if anyone buys a topper like this to put a line of weather stripping on the bottom of the shell to avoid any rubbing of the shell against the bed. I had my topper on about a month before removing it and found some paint rub areas that are down to the black undercoating on the box.

I chose to get the rubber boot in the front instead of the sliding window, so the kids could have easier access to their stuff in the bed. The rubber boot though is not a snug fit. I get alot more leakage around this boot seal than on my 99 GMC that had the same setup.

I can't use my bed extender with this topper as like other posts, it hits the hydraulic rear window lifts.

dcovell question

It's not hard to take a top off. 4 clamps hold it in place. I had one on my last truck and used to take it on and off about once a month. I could do it by myself in about 20 min. I have a deck on the back of my house and rigged up a system where I could back my truck under the deck and I had 4 straps that hung from the bottom of the deck. I would un-clamp the top, lift up one corner at a time and hook the top on some L-Brackets I made. Then just drive the truck out from under the top.
