Bed-extender (potential news)
Howdy,
There was a recent post about the bed-extender on the SuperCrew. Specifically if it was removable with the tailgate locked in the closed position. Well I decided to give it a try last weekend and YES it is removable with tailgate up. Not a problem at all. Thought some of you may want to know. I have an A.R.E. lid on order, but until I get it I think I will remove extnder and matt.

Removing bed extender with tailgate up
I was checking out how to remove the bed extender last night and it takes about 3 sec per side: push in the spring catch and lift up half an inch to pop it off the pivot post, turn around and do the same thing on the other side.
And yes, you can do this with the tailgate up and locked. You could jump in the bed, pop the bed extender and be gone in under 20 secs. It might take a little longer to remove the two pivot posts that you would need to install them in another truck, however! Of course, if you were only replacing the one stolen out of your truck, you wouldn't need to posts.
Mine is now in my basement until I can drill the holes and install the locks that keep the spring catch from pushing in.

I installed a lock on each side, which secures the unit in place whether it's folded away with the tailgate closed and locked OR in use with the tailgate open....(and yes, it swings over with the locks installed)

Look closely at how the 'spring latch' moves. Use a center punch to mark the spot where you will drill a hole STRAIGHT through the bracket, so that when the holes are drilled and the shackle is inserted through and through, the 'spring latch' would be prevented from being depressed. I believe I used a 5/16" bit, which was a hair larger than the 1/4" padlock shackle.

Buy a set of keyed-alike brass locks with a 2" long shackle, install one on each side, and you're set!

Just one man's idea, there are others.

Bed extender
I'm confused. (normal state for me) I'm reading all this discussions about the bed extender and the ability for it to be stolen so I tried something with the installation.
Depending on how you put it in, I think there is a way to install it and lock the tail gate so that even if your bed is open, the extender can't be removed.
Typically, most people will install it by openeing the tailgate and "dropping" the extender down onto the pins. Then the extender must be folded up to close the tailgate. Right?
Has anyone tried removing the extender once it's been folded into the bed? Can't be done on my truck. When it's folded up, you would have to release the pin lock mechanism and somehow push the extender further down into the bed to get it to clear the pins no?
So...for those of you with a locking tailgate, doesn't this accomplish what you are looking for?

Putting the Bed Extender on Another Truck
I'm thinking about selling my bed extender to a guy that has an F150 XLT SuperCrew with no factory bed extender. Does anyone know if he can readily install it on his truck?
TIA
TIA
yes, he can install on his truck. you will have to unscrew your posts and give them with the extender. there are predrilled holes for the posts to screw into on all supercrews.
but why...i'm always picking up wood at home depot and it's neat flipping the ole extender out and sliding the boards through the rails. with the cant and the dividers you don't have to worry about long things fallen out or sliding around.
