Which gearing do you recommend and what mileage are you getting?
Hello all,
I am considering trading in my current truck for a Screw.
I want a 4x4 with the 5.4 and haven't decided what gearing yet.
I have a boat that is around 4300#'s total.
What Mileage are you getting unloaded and loaded?
What gearig are you using?
If I buy used what gotchas do I need to look for?
Thanks!

My Screw has 3.73, and I thought is was available on any of them, with the 7700 type package. I run about 2100 rpm's at 70 and have been averaging about 18mpg's to and from work for the last 3k miles (new truck). I run 70 to 75 on the road then get a little round town driving as well. I'd like to see a little lower revs going down the road but I didn't have a choice, the HD only comes with 3.73's. I'll probably go with a slightly larger tire in the future to try and bring the revs down a little bit, don't want to upset the look of the truck though. You need to decide just how much you're going to be towing. Remember, you can always disengage the OD, which is what they recommend, and when your running lower gears, you'll really be going slower.
According to www.Ford.com and WebCarbook, the only gear ratio available for the SCrew is the 3.55. The only option is limited-slip.
I do agree that the 3.73's would be ideal for this truck - especially for the 4x4's (like mine).

Supercrew's ONLY come with the 3.55 gearing. Ford does not offer any gearing options for the Supercrew's unfortunately....why this is I have no idea....3.73 would be the perfect gear in these trucks!

for the 2001 supercrew, the shortest gearing you can get is the 3.55. i would get it, if your towing a 4300# boat. i got the 5.4L, 3.55 open diff., reg.cab short bed 4x4, and get a pathetic 13-14mpg in heavy city driving. point is, my truck gets pathetic gas mileage as it is, and i think the little performance i gain from a 3.55 versus a 3.08 is well worth the slight drop in mileage.
fyi, for 2001, the 7700# payload group (3.73 gears) is NOT an option for the supercrew.
hope this helps.
the truck you have now is sweet. what was the decision to trade in a f-250 with a v-10 ?

Thanks for the info. 13-14 doesn't sound to good. I get around 10 in town (which is even worse).
Main reason to I am considering trading is for more room (crew cab) and I would like better gas mileage.
I am also looking at the F250 CC diesels. It depends on which one I find a better deal for first. I actually prefer the F250. Now that gas has gone down its not as bad.
There is a considerable price increase with a 250 diesel vs a 150 gas burner.
Right now the diesels are avg'ing 15-17.
I was hoping for a better report from the F150 SCrew but it doesnt appear that ya'll are getting much better on the mileage.
Anyone else want to share their mileage figures?

I have a 2WD XLT with a 5.4 and 3.55 LSD. What I have found from other threads is the 5.4 engine loves to stay below 2000 rpm.
My truck has 16 inch wheels and I am turning about 2050 RPM at 70 MPH. The guys with 17 inch wheels appear to turn about 300 RPM less.
My personal experience (over 4500 miles) has been 13.89 MPG. Most of my driving is "sub-urban" where I deal with many stop signs and traffic lights. My commute is only 7 miles to work (one way). I have gotten 17.78 MPG on a trip to West Virginia which was about 50% Interstate and 50% steep winding highways.
The guys with the 17 inch wheels are getting in the 19-20 MPG range on the open Interstate (don't believe the guys who claim to get over 20).
The overdrive ratio makes such a radical difference in this vehicle, that you can get some outstanding mileage on the highway.
