Surface Rust

Just a lurker from the "dark side" and wanted to relate a problem. After driving our HD SCrew for a month I found surface rust on the wheel discs, steering box, and front axle assemblies. Looks like no one bothered to paint these parts. Job 1? Yeah...........anyways.
Used a product called OSPHO, a steel rust converter. Sprayed it on the steering box and front axles, and dribbled it over the wheel discs. Let it sit for a day or so, give it a light wirebrushing, and painted it with Rustoleum Heat resistant black.
Much better.....my brother-in-law is bringing his F250 over for me to do after he saw rust on his and none on ours.
Hints: wear gloves and goggles..this stuff is phosphoric acid...stings the eyes, and if you have a cut on your fingers...YOWWWW!!!!
Use in a well ventilated space, like outdoors.
Take off your tires when you do the discs...easier to do the job and no chance of staining your wheels.
When painting the discs, have a helper mask off the contact area of the disc as you spray. I use a manila folder. A little overspray won't hurt and will polish off the first few times you drive the truck.
I have used OSPHO for over 20 years, with no problems with plastic or rubber parts. It will stain the paint so be careful. Flush everything with water once you finish the painting and let the paint dry a couple of days.

Also the tie rod ends, spindles, rear axle spring perches, rear pumpkin. I too can't believe they did this. Quite a bit of work to paint all that stuff so it doesn't look like crap. Did the hubs too. At least the calipers have a nice silver finish, wonder how long that will last.

I've done about the same thing that you guys have. I posted this a couple months back, but the responses were, "who cares about rust".
Now I can see black through my aftermarket wheels instead of crusty rust and hopefully, the truck won't rot out from under me.

Who cares about rust????

Hey, you spend this much money for a cage and it had better be right, the FIRST time. This is the first new vehicle I have purchased in over 25 years, and it has to last. Mostly I stick to the 2 wheeler....

What did you use on the axles and discs? You mention a rubberized coating, or was that the basic undercoating?
