Thumbs down Flat Tire

Just a little tip for owners who haven't had their tires off for a while. I picked up a chunk of metal in my rear tire Friday after work. I procceded to try to change it and could not get the wheel off the hub. It took me 2 hours and a 4 pound sledge to get it off. Good thing I wasn't out on the freeway. Well the tire is unrepairable and I have to wait 3-5 days to get another goodyear to replace it (due to ford recall). I have taken all the tires off and cleaned the hub and applied anti-sieze compound to them so hopefully next time I have to take them off they will come off easily.

Also you may want to look at your spare, mine has 4 deep gouges in it from rubbing on the bottom side were it sits stored away. Looks bad. I think I am going to try to pad this area so it doesn't continue to rub the gouges into the spare.

Thanks for the tip. Will be checking mine tonight. I assume they were stuck from rust ? or paint ?

I had this with my 98 Supercab when rotating tires. Seems to be some kind of corrosion between the aluminum wheel and the steel hub.
We put antiseize on it to prevent a reoccurance.

It helps if you put a piece of carpet between the spare and the frame

1stnuford; It was stuck because of rust. Lots of salt on the roads this winter which I think contributed to the problem.

Marv1; Great idea, I was thinking of something like that also. That spare sure is ugly and I can't get another wrangler rt/s for 3-4 weeks (not the 3-5 days I was quoted). They did give me a spare to use until it arrives.

Hey minncrew,

I got a flat the other day and had no problem getting the lugnuts loose...oh yeah, never mind..the truck only had 180 freaking miles on it......after I changed the tire I checked the pressure in the others, the left rear had 55lbs the 2 fronts had 52. Don't ya just love dealer prep. I will protect the spare with a piece of rubber though, thats a great idea.

Minncrew,

Sorry to hear about your tire troubles.

Just a note for everyone, I live in the desert, (no salt) and at 4,000 miles, I was disgusted with the amount of rust that I could see through my nice chrome wheels. I wrote about this as "rustbunnies", which some of you responded by saying that the rust didn't bother you. Well, Minncrew is a good example of why we should all care.

Rust is not normal on a brand-new vehicle! It gets worse over time, not better.

I took all of my wheels off, put rust-converter on almost everything (recommended
by a guy on the crew board) and then painted a lot of the parts black. Now I can see black behind my wheels instead of rust.

The anti-seize compound is also a good idea, but both of these fixes, are time-consuming and we shouldn't have to be doing any of this.
(I took pictures of before & after to show Ford.)
