Thumbs up Perfect oil filter wrench

Just changed my oil and oil filter for first time and after beating my filter and bloodying my knuckels for almost 1 1/2 hours, I went to a local mechanic and bought the perfect solution. This filter wrench is the best one I have found anywhere. It takes a 3/8" ratchet drive and can only turn one way, counter clockwise. It fits the FL-820S filter perfect and doesn't slip off. I've seen others that you have to bolt in 3 places on top that are similiar, but this one is spring loaded and catches on the grooves of the filter. My filter was half caved in too and it still worked great!!! Took 10 seconds to get it off and man was it TIGHT! Anyway, I believe you can get it from NAPA auto parts stores, thats where this was from. Give it a try...

Great tip!

It's funny how tight it is in there with such a big truck.

I will be going to NAPA today...

the Trick is to break the filter loose while engine oil is cold then drive around few miles then change your oil and filter

Joe, I'm not sure the name of it since I bought it direct from a local mechanic, but he said he got it from the napa truck that stops at his shop. I will try and see if I can get the name of the product.

Huskerscrew...Thanks for the tip. I'll have to get one of those filter wrenchs also. How did you handle the mess of oil that leaks out as you loosen the filter plus when you finally pull the filter off a few more gurgles come out. Sure makes a mess dripping all over the place. Also, was there a small wire bundle (maybe 2 or 3 wires wrapped with electrical tape) looping under your filter? Seems like a bad place for wires up against a hot oil filter.

Changed mine last weekend. It was a bear getting it off alright. I just used a normal filter wrench though. As for the wires, I believe those are your oil pressure sending unit wires. Mine were right in the way as well. I tucked them up beside the aluminum base the filter screws to. They are out of the way now. As for the mess, sure is, even with the little drip tray on the frame member there. Beats the hell out of me why they can't design a more user friendly setup. I've been considering a remote filter setup like the older F150's. Not up by the bumper but at least in a more reasonable spot. Did you guys put in the 5w20 stuff or got with something else??

Hey, Huskerscrew, I lived in NE most my life, around Hastings. Great state but I've really been enjoying riding my bikes year round down here.

I thought 5w-20 oil was a bit thin too but since Ford recommends and I didn't design the engine, I'll go by the book. I'm sure it doesn't hurt to put 5w-30 but just in case, I also don't want to take a chance and void the warrenty if a problem did arise. The only problem with 5w-20 is you can't find it anywhere besides Walmart right now. My local Walmart was only carrying 2 quarts at a time but finally by my request ordered 3 cases of it and I snuck in and bought em all.

Hey Irutt, how's it going fellow(former) Nebraskan I've been on here before with the name ScrewDriver2001, but decided to change it (only problem is, I'm a new member again) lol!

I went ahead and put in 5W20 like a good dubby. Went to Walmart and they only had 7 qts so I bought them all. Wasn't cheap either. Paid $1.77 per qt for those suckers. The local Ford dealer wanted $2.25 per qt. Hopefully the stuff will start getting more common as time goes on. I can't imagine the engine being bothered by 5W30 but for now I will try to stay with 5W20.

Did my first change today, and I was prepared with a new-fangled high-tech oil wrench -- everyone here had me scared to death! Heck, that filter came off easy as pie with a plain old wraparound wrench with the rubber inside the metal strap. I also found that drain pan to be pretty helpful, just crack the filter open and let most of the oil trickle out first, then tip the filter and pour enough to let you work the filter out through its surroundings. No problemo. Also installed a Fumoto oil drain valve to make future changes much easier. Life is good!

I found some similar wrenches. Going to NALA today to see if they might have it. If so I will get part number.
