Question Has anyone removed their hard tonneau?

I would be interested to hear from anyone who has removed their hard tonneau cover? What brand is it, how does it come off, how many people did it take, was it HEAVY? That kind of stuff.

I am trying to decide what I want for my screw and I like the functionality of the Advance cover best and the looks of an Astro best. I want to be able to take off the lid by myself or at a minimum with the help of my wife. I don't want to have to round up a neighbor to get it off.

Inavarro: Have you been pleased/satisfied with the latching mechanism of your *******? Any problems?

sundog7-

My lid has two barrel locks on each side. They work perfect, and can be adjusted easily if necessary.
I'm not sure if that's what you mean by latching mechanism, I think there are other lids that have some sort of latching lift handle, mine is not that type.

Oh, I dunno one50. Arbee can do it himself. Anyone can do it with ANY hard tonneau. All Arbee's gotta do is back his bad boy up under the tree, toss a couple of lines over a stout lower branch, sling the tonneau, and start yankin'! Not a problem! Lacking a convenient tree, however, I'd agree with you completely. ALL those tonneaus are pretty durn heavy. My local dealer had several brands on racks outside. It was easy to heft a couple of them to check their weight. You got any dealers like that around your area, Arbee?

I have a ******** lid. Don't know what the weight is, it's not a one person job, but two people can handle it fine. Usually one of my sons will help, but I'm sure my fiancee could help too. The Screw also uses a smaller lid than a typical full size truck.

I'm not sure how the ones you're looking at are attached, but mine has tab/slot hinges at the front. The standard procedure to remove this type is:

1.)someone stands on the tailgate to hold the open lid when you pop off the gas shocks

2.) while they're holding the lid open you slide out the hinges from the slots

3.) lay the disengaged lid back down on the bed

4.) pick it up from both sides of the truck and walk it off the bed

I lay it on a folding table in the back yard when I temporarily remove it to keep it from getting scratched. This procedure takes less than 5 minutes.

My Advance Cover is a hard toneau thats folds in half. It can be easily removed in about 2 minutes by one person by loosening 2 screws. It weighs around 40lbs. I have done research for a good while on bed covers and I thinks the Advance is the one that will work for me.

Due to the curvature of the SCrew bed I choose to stay away from the roll up cover and due to the removal difficulty I decide not to go with a solid lid. The lack of security of a soft cover canned that idea. My cover I am able to open it half way and carry a tall item in it. Or if I have to....it can be removed and laid on the bed floor or stand it on the side to transport whatever.

But, anyway you look at it, there is no one perfect cover for the Screw. You just have to go with the one you think will work for you.

Just my 2 cents worth....anyway who in the hell am I.

Good luck !

I just ordered the ARE LS II tonneau cover..

For my truck (short bed), it weighs 115 lbs..

My wife and I should easily be able to remove it in just a couple minutes..

I've got the advance cover and really like it. I plan to take some photos and put them on the web over the weekend. I much prefer to the hard, heavy fiberglas covers......

Ditto on the Advance cover. It really works when you need to carry large items. I put an engine crate in yesterday that was about 3 feet tall, just had to open the back half and it fit right in. Also makes loading the front of the bed very easy. I have 2 small children so carry a lot of luggage and baby stuff, as well as a basset hound when we travel on the weekends. To get the front of the bed loaded with luggage, I just flip the front half of the lid open and load until full. You can't do this as easily with any other hard tonneau that I know of.
Last weekend it started to rain on the way back home so I closed the back lid and left a small gap to give the dog some light. Everything stayed dry.

It is also easy to remove with one person.

You guys with the Advance Cover............

Could you please post some pictures of your cover from different angles? Also of the locks and how it attaches to the truck.

I don't have a dealer in my area and would love to see what it looks like on the Screw.

I will be removing it weekly to put a garden tractor in the bed.

Thanks

Got some photos this weekend. Five good shots of the cover closed, open, hinges, mount, etc. Now all I have to do is figure out how to post them on the site. Anyone who can offer me some help on the best way to do this would be greatly appreciated..I've read some of the instructions on the site and it's not real clear (maybe I haven't had enough coffee yet....)
Thx!

Meanwhile, from the archives here are pictures on Dutchy's truck. The center hinge disconnects by loosening 2 bolts on the hinge brackets. (3/8 end wrench, I think.)

Question

The Advance top sounds exactly like what I've been looking for. One question, Is the tailgate also secured with this top?

Labanimal,
My tailgate is secure because I have a locking latch. With the tailgate locked and the locks on the cover "locked", you would have to get a crowbar to pry open the cover to get inside or at the tailgate. Hope I answered your question. Photo of the back corner FYI.
