Question Screw Hard Tonneau

I want to get a nice hard lid for my truck. I looked through all the old posts but most were about availability and price. I know I want a smooth fitting one piece. Snuglid is out of the question since there are no dealers anywhere near me. Looks like it will be a ARE, LEER or *******. Anyone have any pics of these and prices they paid??? Advice? Pros/cons with these types?

I was looking at the ARE cover but the colors dont seem to match. A guy at work has the same color truck (White) as mine and his isn't even close. I saw green and Arizona Biege ones and they were not even close.

The guy at work is pimping me to buy a ARE (what ever he has is the best ya' know) and I told him why I probably would not and he blew a gasket.

I like them, but that color????

Joe

BEWARE---Take a road trip to get the snug-lid
it's the ONLY one that makes the COMPLETE corner at the back of the cab to cover ALL OF THE UGLY black plastic top rail of the bed. It MAY be the only one that does not use the funky plastic trim around the edge of the lid. Snug-Lid has a FINISHED EDGE, meaning it is smooth and painted.

Well guys I went to Cottman saturday since I was in the neighborhood for a BBQ. I was kind of ticked when I found they were closed. They closed at noon, what a bummer.
I guess I will call them for a price Monday.

XTRUCKY I searched for a Snuglid dealer..there are none within a 250 mile radius

Thumbs down

I guess I have a little different situation with my ARE LSII lid. I have the Deep Wedgewood Blue S-Crew and the color on the lid matches the truck great. I have 22 years of body/paint shop experience under my belt, so giving credit for that doesn't come easy. However, the quality of that great matching paint really su**s! There are small runs in the clear coat on the moulding around the edge; when I wax the truck there are a number of specks of dirt in the clear coat, some of which have been partially sanded and partially buffed out, and on the front passenger side corner of the cover you can see where they had a problem with the base color coat and sanded and blended the corner of the cover before clear coating it. Just a real p**s poor job!
I purchased it from Arizona Truck Outfitters in Tucson a couple of months ago (at a price of $950 installed; they seem to be cheaper back east), and I tried to point these defects out to them at the time of purchase but they were claiming they didn't see the things I was talking about. Come on, Stevie Wonder could have seen this stuff.
Why did I accept it you ask? I look at it this way; It is an hour+ drive each way to argue with these people, the only other ARE dealer I found is in Phoenix which is about
3 1/2 hours away; ARE has a LIFETIME warranty on the DuPont paint they use; I used to use DuPont paint at my body shop and I figure in the Arizona sun it'll last about 3-4 years before it burns up and they have to repaint it at which time I can be picky as hell about it !

Thumbs up

I just picked up my new A.R.E LSII topper/lid installed at the local A.R.E dealer here in Colorado Springs I used a self print-out coupon
http://www.4are.com/
and saved an aditional $20.00 I have to say I am very happy with the fit and the quality and most of all a perfect paint match , and very nice paintjob. I would highly recomend the A.R.E product, and for anyone in Colorado Springs area ,I was a very satisfied customer at Ely's Toppers

oh yea $730.00 pluss tax installed wish I had a picture , but if you spend anytime on here you will see some nics pic's already . hey maybe a Digital camera for Fathers day
Hummmmm....
Thank's Dan LaChappelle CO.

DrJeffro,

I went back and looked. After the price hike last fall it ended up at about $700.00 with tax and with the $20.00 off coupon from ARE's site. I'd looked at quite a few different makers/dealers and Cottman was the best price at the time and the ARE cover was the one I liked best.

You can also check South Jersey Enterprises on Delsea Dr. They sometimes play price wars with Cottman and others.

I have a the ARE on my 2001 Black and Silver S'Crew and love it. The paint matches perfectly, it covers the plastic rails and gives a few more inches of clearance with the rise in the middle. Besides it looks different than the standard flat covers and I like to stand out :-)
How do I post a picture of it here??

Nothing but good things to say about the A.R.E. lid. I've seen them all and the A.R.E. in my opinion is by far the one to have. Watertight and fit and finish excellent.

I have only had my lid for a couple weeks. I have noticed a couple of times when opening the lid that it sticks on the right side once in a while. Seems like the rod is not completely clearing the tab that it locks into. The handle already has a small scratch in it too Only other complaint is that its harder to see whats behind me.

Did not care for the grey line that is visible with all the other lids in the area

Red Screw,

Most likely when you lock your lid the handle doesn't sit flush?? Sound similar to the problem I had??? You have 2 choices with respect to your problem:

1. If you don't want to mess with it. Take it back and let the dealer adjust it the right way since you paid for it anyway.

or

2. Take an allen key to the cross rods and make the adjustment yourself. It takes about 5 minutes and you don't have to wait around for the dealer to get to you.

2A. You also might want to check the 1/2" nut/bolt combo that's used for the height adjustments at the end of each locking rod. If the right side sticks, you might need to lower the rod 1 to 2 notches. I just had to do the opposite today because mine wasn't snug enough on the right side, thus could be lifted up a bit by hand when locked.

Laters,
TL

Now off to the shore I go................

PS: You also want to retighten the lockdown clamps a little after a few hundred miles. The cover tends to move a little as it seats itself.
