Post What Is It ?

I'm trying to figure out the "post and bracket" that is locate on the bottom tailgate and back of the bed ? You see it when the tailgate is in the down position.

Does this have something to do with the bed extension?

Just curious!

I think it is to keep the tailgate from hitting the bumper if it comes unhooked.

I thought that also, but I unhooked the cables and the tailgate will rest on the bumper. So I tossed that idea.

SSG57,

I have wondered the same thing. I have it on my SCrew but my 1997 SCab didn't. They didn't add this extra cost for no reason.

Howdy!

Ford engineers thoughtfully designed that so we can hook several grills to truck for tailgate parties. Also helps to not slip off when you're busy with your girlfriend back there..

Have a hot day.

------------------
My ride:

Basics:
- '99 XLT F-150

Under hood and back:
- Ram air (Don't ask me how )
- AiRaid intake
- Flowmaster DF 50 Series
- 24x3.5" Stainless steel slashed tips (Yes! Solid polished SS, no cheesy chrome-plated)
...

Outside:
- Precision polished billet grille and plate holders
- American Racing 17x8s polished Pythons (Flushed front AND back)
- Goodyear.. something tires (Expensive is all I know. LOL. No Firestone firecrackers for me either)
- Rhino liner
- Ford nerf bars
- Ford bed rails
...

Inside:
- My girlfriend!
...

Fun stuff:
- Dual sirens Black Widow alarm system/keyless entry (Enough decibels to go deaf in a garage )
- Custom driving lights (Just a cool blue)
- 2 High-Watt lights behind grille (For people who cut me off )
- Dual horns (For people who, again, cut me off)
- Dual wheel locks (So I won't be driving home on bricks!)
- Spare wheel lock (So I won't have to use a brick as a spare )
...

Best of all:
- Texas A&M University aTm front plate! Gig'em Aggies!!

Question

100lbs? I hope it is more than that. I weigh quite a bit more than that ;-), and being rather short, I know of no other way to climb in to the bed. Does anyone have a definitive answer on this? Should I not be standing on my tailgate to climb in to the bed?

Thx...

I just noticed this yesterday. On the factory bed extender it says not to "carry" more than 100lbs on the tailgate. However, being 230 lbs myself, I never have felt like the tailgate was going to give way underneath me. That might be for traveling down the road and a sudden jolt (pothole) might cause damage. Then again, how many times do you put something "just on the tailgate".

I think it's a reinforcement. Those of us that have the Bed x-tender will use our tailgates down more than those who don't. So my guess is that it gives the tailgate extra stability. Keeps it from fallin if carrying alot of weight on tailgate incase cables break. My .02. By the way, does anyone know how much weight the tailgate is capable of handling?

s/crew:

I think the tailgate is rated for 100 pounds. I saw that in the manual. I'm sure you could up it a little as that is less than three 40 lb. bags of salt. Your cables are the issue.
