Question Anybody have an Extang or Downey on a Screw?

I am interested in a soft tonneau that does not alter the truck at all. I know most of the newer ones are like this. I do not want to drill into my baby. I also want to cover the stupid plastic pieces Ford put on the bed rails. (Has anyone pulled them off? What does it look like underneath?)I dont want too many gaps. Do they cover well? Are they noisy? Any input is appreciated.

Question

I guess no one has one of these tonneaus? I saw a Lariat Screw heading south with a soft tonneau and it was fluttering in the wind. This is what I would like to avoid. Any experiences?

I have a Extang cover and it is very easy to put on. I didn't alter my truck in any way.
I have a feature in that allows you to either tighten or loose it that olny takes a second.

I have the Extang "Snapless" Tonneau. I think it works great !...No mods to the truck necessary and it fits very tightly....Just make sure you get three crossbars in your kit...If they only included two you can call Extang and they'll send a third one free.....With three crossbars there is minimal flutter and it looks great...Good Luck !

Have you considered a lightweight hard cover? I've put the advance cover on mine (www.advancecover.com) and really like it. easy to remove (40 lbs +/- and 2 screws). secure (locks). pretty watertight. Looks good on the truck (black finish like the soft covers). Just have to drill 4 3/16" holes in the bed for the brackets. Everything else clamps on. Can use some rubber plugs if I ever want to remove completely.

Just my $0.02.

Zacky,
I'm working on getting a digital camera from work. Need to get some photos for my book... The cover looks pretty good. Low and flat across the entire back. The thing you notice is exactly how much curve we have in our beds from fron to back. It's pretty significant. Will try to get photos this weekend and post. Paid $500 here in Houston. Installed myself. Took about 3 hours. Looks pretty good with the black trim on the Arizona Beige.

I also have the Extang tonneau, and it works well. There is not too much flutter, and installation was dead simple. It does not alter the truck at all. It's a good product for the price; recommended.

Norm: I may be the Screw you saw heading south with the fluttering Extang cover. 01' black Lariat with Extang cover and Weston black step bars. Overall I'm not very happy with the Extang. It came with only 2 cross menbers instead of 3. When they installed it, I think they installed the rear cross member too far rearward (which I'm sure don't help). Someone mentioned to call Extang and they'll ship a third one. I may try that. The reason I bought an Extang is because of previous ownership. I had an Extang cover on my 96 reg. cab short box 4x4. It had 3 cross members and it was the "J" channel style. That was a great cover that stayed on with minimal flutter. Just don't remove it in the winter when it's cold. Real hard (impossible) to get back on. I got the snaps this time and hate them. I hope this helps you out.

We have the Extang Black Max cover on our Screw. It comes with three bows in the box and fits so there no fluttering in the wind. This is the third Extang cover I have owned and am planning on buying one for My Flareside this spring

I too, have a BlackMax from Extang. Mine only came w/two bows, but I've asked them for a third via e-mail. It wasn't too hard to install, though I did it in winter. And no matter how much they advertise "no tugging, install in any temp", that's a crock. I had to wait 'til a sunny day and my tonno was warm (put it over the house heating vent) before I could stretch it on. I'm seriously looking at one that raises, however, for easier access. If you're interested, we could work something out. kevin.tucker@eds.com

Cool

I bought at Portsmouth Ford. I believe I have the 1.02" radiator but I have not actually measured it. I do not tow anything yet anyway and I have yet to hear from anyone about overheating problems. I do plan on asking about it in May at my first service visit though. I am leaning towards the Black Max Extang Tonneau because i like the looks of the all black hardware.

Norm

I bought at Portsmouth aswell and spoke with service and parts regarding the radiator. They are new to the issue and not volunteering to look into it. I am thinking of an in person visit. I have had no problems with my black max and it helps my gas mileage with my 30 mile commute.

Hi Norm: I have an Extang cover - just got it in the last month. I have a S/C short box - the kit came with three monster bows and was simple to install, even with the bed liner. I like the looks, but the bed walls do curve and the toneau is straight - other than that it's fine. It was cool when I put it on, but some shop lights heated it up enough to snap on. In regard to the rail caps, I believe they are unfinished underneath, so they shouldn't be removed. Good luck!
