Thumbs up Bright Fogs revisited

Just put in the 9005s in my fog lamps..WOW! what a difference is right! Some said they didn't need to modify the tabs on the bulb, but I did, which was really simple. I just used some little wire cutters to cut the plastic tab down a little. Took two seconds.
Haven't been out on the road, but in my driveway it is a world of difference. Just hope it doesn't cause any flashers. We will see. Thanks to whomever recomended this

Let there be light!

SCREWDRIVER

This was my find. Glad you like it. All who have tried it seem pleased. I still don't understand why some don't need to make mod to get the bulbs to fit.

BTW - Many years ago I graduated HS in PLattsmouth NB(Class of 62). I remember well the cold and snow. During HS I worked in a furniture store in Avoca and during college I worked in a truck stop on US RT. 75. It was just South of a little town called Union which is East of Lincoln on US Rt 34. I wonder if it's still there. I hear from friends you have had plenty of opportunity to use your 4X4 this winter. I'll be visiting again sometime in the summer or fall of 2002 for my 40th reunion.

Made the same mod myself and was great on the mountain roads. No flashers, I was concerned also.
I also had to trim the tab on the bulb and I have a fairly new SCrew (built Jan 29, 2001).
Next mod is the running lights with high beams and auto lights. That should be very bright
Anyone able to use the super bright bulbs (are the the XV's) in place of the normal lights? Did they make a significant difference? I know the 65w running lites did!

Same here. Is the 9005 a manufacturers number. I see in my Performance catalog that PIAA has that number in a 60 watt bulb. Is that what you guys are using? Looks a little steep for a fog light bulb. Can you buy them at any auto parts store or are they special ordered? Thanks for the info.

Yes, 9005 is the part number. They can be bought at any auto parts store. They are the high beam 65 watt bulbs used for 4 headlight systems. Standard OEM bulb. They replace the 9145 OEM foglamp bulbs. Pretty cheap mod..Mine cost $13.50 for the pair.

So. NH SCREW Owner, thanks a lot for the find! Yes, Union is still around and so is Avoca. Yep, the winter was a little brutal this year...For the most part I had my Ranger 4x4 to get through the drifts. I live out in the country and the drifts were 8 to 10 feet high in places (those I didn't attemp to go through..LOL! Just got my Screw Mar 1, and it hasn't snowed since then. I think spring is finally here (I hope!) Thanks again.

I have a question.
I thought fog lights were for when theres fog or like heavy rain exc...
The fog lights emit a low beam with a distinctive sharp cut off at a certain height. Which is wide and low.

I was thinking of going with the 9005's but I don't want a high beam efect with my fogs.

The only thing I can think of is the lens determine's the beams shape and even if you put in the 9005 you will still get the correct light pattern.

Is this making any sense?

I compared the two different bulbs and the cut off. The difference is a wider and brighter light field, not any higher effect like a standard high beam would emit. None that I can tell. I believe the placement of the plastic lens is the key. Look at the photo above, the light is below on the ground as with the dimmer bulbs..I haven't tried them in the fog yet but I did try in the rain, and it was MUCH better than the 9145s, and not one flasher from oncoming traffic!

Question

Is there a problem with the heat given off, by the brighter bulbs? I would like the better light given off, by the brighter bulbs. I just would hate the thought of melting the plastic lens on the fogs.
Thanks.
PS. sorry if this was answered in a previous disscussion.

I too have upgrade my fog lamps. I did notice that the drivers side seemed to "pop" right in, even though i had a hard time seeing what i was doing. Then came the passengers side. It wasn,t as cooperative. I took a little more of a notice to what i was doing. As I pushed and turned the bulb, I notices that One tab didn't make it, cross-threaded in a way. As i kept turning it this way, I noticed the same "pop" noise and then bulb finally seated and continued to tighten like a normal bulb should till it stops. This was my 2 cents. It is just so hard to see what you are doing in that wheelwell after you get two arms in there.

Well I got some 9005's at Kmart today on sail for 5.00 apiece.
One thing I did notice is on the front of the 9005's bulb there is no dark paint on the tip. Why do some halogen bulbs have the tip painted and some don't?
The one's I removed were painted on the tip.
I hope it's not to reflect heat so as to not damage the lense and or change the beam of light.

Mark

I really hate changing anything stock.

Upgraded mine a little over a month ago before I took a trip to Tennessee. I didn't have to trim anything. I tried 3 different brands of bulbs just to see If all were made the same and I didn't have any trouble getting either brand in. Seems very strange some people need to trim a little.

Drove tonight first time with 9005's good Lord what a difference.
The fogs are so bright that when I turned them off the regular headlights seemed sooo dim.

Now I have to have brighter headlights but how?
Or just a different light like blue light?

Supercrew2001red5.4,

Have you considered replacing the bulbs in your headlights with Xenon 9007s? You can typically find them on Ebay for pretty good prices (retail they can be about $40, however, you can usually find them for under $20 on Ebay).

Just a thought...
