I get a sound at idle that sounds just like a small eletric motor running in the dash. It is actually a cable running through the firewall up behind the brake pedal. If I reach way down there with my foot and step on the cable the noise stops. I only have this at idle. When I posted this problem back in February I was told to check this cable and use a tie wrap to put it under tension and the noise would stop. I have been waiting for my first trip back to the dealer with some other items so I will let them do it. A friend of mine had the same problem with his 2000 Expedition. Good luck.

Post Intermittent Buzz In Dash

I recently developed an intermittent buzz which sounds like its coming from somewhere inside the dashboard area, though it could possibly be coming from something mounted on the firewall. I have heard it only when stopped and it comes and goes. Its a low level buzz, or relay chatter type of sound. Of course it never happens when I'm home where I can really investigate it.
Anyone come across this yet? Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Its going in soon for the correct raditor installation and I'll have them check it out
then.

silverstreaker,
Just an update. Last night as I pulled into the driveway, it started to happen. I set the parking brake left it in gear and did indeed trace the buzz to the cable you spoke of. I actually could feel the buzz in the cable. I tried pulling and pushing on the cable without too much success. I did not really see a good place to ty-wrap the cable to in order to hold some tension on it. I will look some more though.
This cable comes from the transmission and terminates at the steering column, It is used for gear selection.

I know this is old but I have the same problem. The buzz goes away when I move the shift lever. It also changes pitch when I touch the throttle and goes away once the rpm's get above 1000. It being tranny related makes sense but there has to be a better solution than zip tying the cable. Anybody else know what actually causes it?

When i take of at a like 4000rpms i hear a sound sorta like that, but only when i take off that hard, almost sounds like a lightning taking off, just on the inside, now the outside, idk what it could be.

possibly could be the cable that goes to the speedo, or tach. IDK if its about a 1/4" thick its prolly the gear selector.

And darren, yours is possibly the alternator whineing, check to make sure your belt isnt over tightened. Could be the Power Steering pump too. But im gonna make bets on the alternator, my moms van used to whine b.c they put a new belt on it, and it was a tad too tight.
