Post Vibration at 70 MPH?

Just purchased my S'Crew last week. Last night I got on the freeway for the first time and drove 40 miles into L.A. I noticed that at around 70 to 75 MPH, an intermitent up & down vibration would occur in the 3rd and 4th lanes... seemingly like the truck was blowing a tire! I looked at the tires of other vehicles around me to guage whether or not the pavement was at fault but no go. Any ideas what's happening? Other than this I love the truck!

Thanks

I had a shimmy in the steering wheel @ 65mph. Dealer re-balanced all four wheels and it's been good for 5,000 miles.

I have been going through the same problem. The dealer replaced 3 tires (BFG's)and the vibration is still there. The vibration is cyclical in nature and is felt through the steering wheel. The truck is dead smooth except for the vibration in the steering wheel. I love the truck, just not the vibrations.

Usually vibration in the steering wheel is caused by the front wheels being out of balance...Fibration on the floor and seat is rear wheels out of balance...You mentioned 3tires were replaced. What happen to the 4th.?

River, The dealer indicated that all tires balanced and *load tested* fine. The *load test* is just that, they load the tire to determine high spots, or, out of round conditions. The only vibration I have is in the steering wheel, I don't feel anything in the seat or floor. The vibration is a high freq. or, buzz in the wheel and does go away at times (cyclical).
They have had 4 shots at it and it may be time for a buy back...I hate vibrations.

I now have 2080 miles on my SCrew and have had a vibration problem since day one. At 57 mph it starts resonating like a turbo-prop and doesn't fade until around 75 mph. This is consistent and very annoying. The dealer's shop agreed there was a problem and checked various things, including rotating and balancing all 4 wheels. No luck. "Must be the driveshaft. Got one on order". 4 days and my new driveshaft is now installed. No change. The vibration starts like clockwork at 57 mph. Doesn't matter if it's in overdrive or locked out. To top it off I'm moving 200 miles away next week and have to start over with another dealership that didn't sell me the truck. I don't need this!

Has the dealer checked for a bent wheel on the front and/or wheel bearing preload?

I had an Explorer and had the same problem. The factory alloy was slightly tweaked; found it myself by jacking the wheels up, placed a fixed pointer perpendicular to the rim/bead area, turned the wheel around by hand and found the wheel was not true. Dealer replaced it.

SakoL461, my vibration starts around 65, and my dealer checked driveshaft runout and it was OK. I did find one thing that seemed to help, raising the air pressure to 35lbs. You would think this would make it worse, but it realy did help. In my case, I think it's either the steering box preload is incorrect, or the box itself is bad.

Interesting tire pressure change. Though I have nothing relative to say regarding your vibration, it seems a lot of folks on the board are running closer to 40psi in their tires.

brossman, sticker on the truck says 26lbs for the front tires and 32lbs for the rear
tires. The BFG's indicate a 35lb max @ max load on the tire itself. These tires are not LT type tires so higher pressures aren't warranted.
Dealer can't fill all 4 the same anywho...

Crewd: You sure that vibration isn't from an S-10 or something wrapped around your axle?

We had similar vibration problems with the wife's 2001 Expedetion bewteen 60 - 65 mph. Over a three week period the dealer rotated & balaced tires, installed a new driveshft, motor mounts, vibration dampner and a couple other things. To make a long story short, the ended up repalcing it with a new one with some "cash assistance" from Ford.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have tried 39 lbs like most people run, 35 lbs like the tire says, and the dealer set them to 28 front/32 rear. Makes no difference. I think it's in the driveline because when it's in that range you can play with the accelerator pedal and make the vibration change. But hey, I'll let them do whatever they want as long as it gets fixed.
