New Supercrew: Gas mileage kinda su...
Today I filled up the tank on my new S'Crew after a week of ownership. After 300 miles on a full tank from the dealer, it took 22 gallons of gas (roughly 13.60 mpg). Half of these miles were freeway driven... the other half city. I've got the 4.6 and have been careful not to push the engine too hard. Is there a possible problem here? Will these numbers improve as I brake in the engine?
Thanks for your time,
Jon

Crewd,
Don't worry too much, I was getting scared about the mileage too until my 5th tank. I've been using the same gas station (nearest to the house) so the quality should be the same. I went from 12mpg to 14mpg to (finally) 18.5mpg. Not bad for the weight and performance! I use regular unleaded per the owners manual. I've noticed a really pleasant increase in engine responsiveness and more of a "free" feeling when increasing RPM's for passing and hills too. Maybe the computer has finally "learned" my driving style, or the engine is starting to break in.

Over the last 3,500 miles I am averaging about 12.5 MPG. That is even after adjusting for the increased tire height. My truck now has 6,000 miles.
I guess it is the price we pay...

My very first tank I averaged 14mpg with modest city driving. The second tank was mostly highway with the average of 16mpg. My third tank with both a little more aggressive city and highway driving came to 15mpg. I now have around 660 miles on it after owning it a little over a week now. I wouldn't really worry right away, these trucks are big.

Well i just did a road trip. Started at around 3000 miles left NJ, drove to Fla. kept it @ 65 all the way down Had about 300 lbs of crap in the back and 2 poeple total. . Did low to moderate amount of driving around down there for a month, and drove back to NJ, @ 70 to 75 all the way. Used cruise control all the time.
I have a hard lid on the truck which helps ALOT with the mileage.I now have 8000+ miles on the truck. Averaging all the fuel and miles for the whole trip came out to 15.6 MPG.
I got the 5.4,and 4wd, ORP- See sig.

Don't worry too much. I got 11.5-12.5 for the first 1000 miles, now I get 14.5. All my miles are in bumper to bumper, stop and go traffic in a very hilly town. All things considered I think I can live with that.

I just hit 1000 miles on my truck after 3 weeks of ownership...On the first 2 tanks of gas it seemed as if I had a leak in my tank, it sucked it dry fast!
Now at the 1000 mile mark, my gas mileage is improving immensely. But buying this big beast, I knew gas mileage wasn't going to equal that of a compact car anyway. I do mostly hwy driving during the week, very little city driving at all. The more I drive this truck and as the engine breaks in, I am very impressed with the 5.4L engine! Personally, I don't think this engine needs any mods what so ever to improve its performance, but thats just my opinion. I'm a very happy owner!!
The only thing that I worry about is somebody is going to wreck into me, cause everywhere I go, the heads keep turning...

Crewd,
That sounds like good milage right now for me. Between all the storms up here in the northeast the last couple of weeks. My last tank I got 10.4 mpg. But I wouldn't trade this truck for the world. I probably could have done better, but driving through 20 inches of snow for about 350 feet is just an awsome experince.
This truck goes anyplace and BACK!!!!!

Gas Mileage has been a sore subject going from a 4.0L Ranger to a 5.4L SuperCrew, but I finally have something to brag about. On a recent road trip after adding ARE LSII with Sport Wing, I got 363 miles on a tank and averaged 16.6 mpg. That is the best to date and hope to better that after future mods.
I just had my third fill-up today, first 2 were 16 and 15 and this one was 14. 65/35 highway to city with easy pedal action. Kind of disappointed. hoping to stay 15+ neighborhood. Let's hope the one chap is right with slight improvement after 1K. Will the K&N setup improve it ?
