Angry 5-20 Oil -- Anyone Else Gouged by Dealer?

I got my first service yesterday, at the dealer's. I figured $49.95 is a little high, but what the heck. Then they said that, despite the huge sign and the price board behind the counter, the FIRST service is $59.95. Something about checking the battery for the first service only. Okay, I'm still with them. But then when I pick the truck up, the charge is $75. Know what cost the extra $15? The fact that I ordered "special" oil that came from a bottle, rather than their drum. The special oil? 5-20. That's all. The manufacturer's recommended oil. The one on the oil cap. In my door jamb. In my owner's manual. MADE BY FORD FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. Also, the oil that probably benefits Ford more than me (we all know it's so that Ford could get LEV status on their trucks and meet mileage requirements).

I just about lost it. The service manager took care of me, but I was really p.o.'ed that they even TRIED to charge me. How many other people are paying a premium, at a Ford dealer, just to use the Ford oil that Ford recommends? Hmmmpphh!! (Never mind the fact that when I first asked for 5-20 my service advisor said, and I quote: "Yes, we have that. It's 5-30, actually." And I had to explain to him that I wanted the RIGHT oil in my $35,000 pickup truck!)

What type of service are they offering? I take my ruck to the dealer 5 minutes away from my house. They change the oil, filter, and check all the fluids for under $20. Also, when I buy 6 oil changes, the 7th is free .

LongTime and others,

I had a theory which I put it to a test. I have called so many auto part stores for about those 5W-20 oil. None of them carry it in my area. I mean AutoZone, PepBoys, TrakAuto, PennAuto, NAPA Auto, etc. Until I happen to call one place that does deliver parts and supplies to hundreds mechanics on their account, and when I asked about the 5W-20 oil .. their response was, "you got a new ford truck, right?" They said if I am really desperate to get 5W-20 in my truck, go to the FORD dealer service dept. BUT .. all mechanics on their account put in 5W-30 in all of the new ford trucks. Also, the auto part supply store puts in 5W-30 in all of their new 2001 Ford Ranger delivery trucks. Before we hung up on the phone, we agreed it was a gimmick that FORD service dept is trying to sell their own 5W-20 oil.
My conclusion is that if all of auto part store cannot get 5W-20 in stock so therefore I say heck with it.
I put in 5W-30 in my S'Crew with a good feeling knowing that I don't have to go to FORD service dept at all. Save tons of money! Change the oil at my convenience! No appointments! Less chance of damage to my truck by those Ford Service WrenchMonkeys.

I work at Napa and we sell it. Valvoline is the maker. My cost which is 10% above distribution center is $1.46. Normal cost is $1.69. Funny thing is none of the NAPA stores we deliver to ever buy it.

The Motorcraft 5W-20 oil is availabe at Walmart as stated by Roger Nicolini. Also Checker Autoparts carries Pennziol 5W-20. Another source is Honda 5W-20...it's at every dealer since all their vehicles use it also.

Just got my oil changed last Sat. at the local ford dealer; $29 which included a
"12 point inspection" and check/fill fluids.
I know they put 5-20 in mine because the parts dept. has a big window looking out to the service area and the tech working on my truck came in, picked up several qts. from stock, they gave him the filter and he headed back to my truck put the filter on,lowered the hoist and proceeded to pour the oil in.
(I observed this while eying some new goodies in the parts dept.)

I use Texan Ford located on I10 between mason and fry road. I have taken my truck there a couple of times and I am very pleased with the service. I had a problem with my door alignment and they fixed it up pretty quick and stayed in touch with me. Excellent Service.

I do the oil changes, so I was very happy to find someone besides the dealer who carried 5W-20. The dealer charges $2.20 a quart. Kragen now stocks both Castrol and Vavoline. Just picked up a case on sale @ $0.89 qt.

I WOULD HAVE GONE BALLASTIC IN THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. That is absurd, and you need to write to Ford, and the dealership. There is NO WAY I would have paid that price.
5W20 is standard Motorcraft Oil to be used in EVERY 5.4 liter motor for 2001.
And what is this check your battery S*&T???
That battery is warrantyied for 3 yr/ 36 months, I couldn't care less what they say they have to check. First I'd drag em across the coals. My next oil change would be FREE, and then I'd NEVER go back.

Had my first oil change done last week at 2552 miles. FREE Regular Motorcraft oil change and filter and 20 point service (check all fluids) $19.95

By the way, you didn't mention, are you Male or Female??

I usually change my own oil and filter but for 20 bucks that sounds like a deal. My dealership is 5 blocks away from my work so its convieniant too, so I hope they have a deal like that. I've got just over 700 miles on my truck, was thinking about doing the first change at 1000-1500 miles and then every 3000-4000 miles after that. BTW, I was looking underneath my truck (haven't looked very close yet though) but where the heck are all the lube zerts located on the 4x4s?

XTruky -- I DID go ballistic. And as I said, afterwards they took care of me. I am glad to know that others think this was absurd, too. I would hate to think that I overreacted. ;> )

p.s. I'm a male. I don't think this dealership discriminates when it comes to whom they try to gouge -- it serves a very affluent area and I think a lot of people around here part with their money without thinking carefully about the details. I think the dealership's policy is to go for the gouge, and, if questioned, then make good. That way, if 90% don't complain, their profit margin goes through the roof. Either that or it's just that the cost of doing business here in SoCal really is that much more expensive than other parts of the country.

Thumbs down

my first oil changed was free also, the second one was only 19.95...the 5-20 I had to ask for, they use 5-30..cost was going to be hire cause it wasn't in bulk..checked with the service adviser and said no way, same price as bulk...Ford calls for 5-20 in the manual and on the filler cap, you don't pay a hire price...WalMart has Motorcraft 5-20....
