Question Seat Debate

Ok.... thought I'd expand upon what seems to be a point of contention. My number one concern regarding seats were rear headrests. I have a young son who will be back there, so that's a necessity. With that a given, there's been talk about how uncomfortable the Gen III bench seats are. They've been molded and hardened from what I gather. I must admit, I sat on the leather Gen II front seats, and they were great. Normally I wouldn't go for powered seats because at 6'4" I need all the space I can get up top (won't go for the moon roof as it subtracts 1.5" in height). Well, the Gen II powered leather bench was a dream.... I fit perfectly, top and bottom. The Gen III, was a bit stiff, but manageable. I have to go for Gen III because of the rear headrests, and I'm hoping my big a$$ will soften the seat up a bit.

My questions for the forum are as follows: With what seem to be numerous complaints regarding the Gen III seats, is there a Gen IV on the horizon? How do those of you with the Gen III bench seats feel about them?

Well Grumps, you haven't listened to any other advice I've given, so I would say I hate the bench seats (read: I love them). They are extremely uncomfortable (read: very comfortable) to me. They don't feel anything like bucket seats with the raised edges (read: I can't tell that I'm even riding on a bench seat vs. bucket). I hope my opinions are of no help to you (read: I hope this helps).

I'm also 6'4". I went for a test drive in a Gen III supercrew and was surprised at how close to the roof I was. I also had to duck a wee bit to see properly out of the windshield. I have an F150 supercab and don't have this problem at all. I then sat in a King Ranch, adjusted the seat, and figured it out.

The supercrew I drove had MANUAL seats. The KR had powered seats, just like my F150. The powered seat lets you drop the seat 1-2". So after adjusting the KR seat I had the same view (& same headroom) as my F150. If you are tall, I would consider the powered driver seat mandatory.

If I try to post my opinion like Rasch i'm just going to confuse myself so I'll just say what I mean....I traded a 99 Supercab with the bench seats for my Screw....The bench seats in that truck were the same as the Gen II bench seats in the Screw and I loved them....I too needed the rear head restraints so the Gen III was a must and I ordered my truck....I was VERY apprehensive because I didn't like the "Supported" feel of the buckets in the truck I test drove....BUT - Now that I hve the Gen III bench I have to say it is the best truck seat I've ever been in !...It's super comfortable and as it breaks in it gets even better....I like it much better than the buckets !!.....Anyway, that's my humble opinion...At least I think it is ....er, uh....

Thumbs up

Well, after Geoff's reply, I'm glad I went for the Lariat with the Gen III seats. I had found that in other Ford models, the opposite was true in regards to the height of the electric tilt seats. I have a Ranger Super Cab with a manual bench that I fit fine in (6'4"). When I went with my wife to buy her an Explorer the same went with the manual Explorer seats... but she went ahead and picked out an Explorer ('99) with an electric seat and I hate it. Whatever the mechanism is on which it sits, it raises it an inch or two and it takes me forever to find the right setting when I drive the family. That's why I can't wait for my S'Crew to come in, so I don't have to drive her car anymore on family trips.

One thing is for sure, if you're over six feet, you might want to avoid the moon roof.... unless of course you're tall enough to stick your head out of it when you drive.

I'm 6'1" and have plenty of room with the moon roof. I love the moon roof, it is one of the best options I elected to get, along with the 5.4L, but we well save that one for the other thread..LOL!

Rasch,
Well, it's not that you've been ignored. Your earlier posts on the subject in part caused me to question my decision to purchase the 4.6L in the first place. Your situation just did not mirror mine as closely as some of the 4.6L owners that chimed in. Glad you like the new seats.... I think....

My truck is in the shop and I am driving a SuperCrew for a rental. It does have front/rear headrests, a bench seat in the front with the extra support I see mentioned. It does not have the seatbelts in the seats. Is this a Gen II or Gen III? It is fairly new with 2600 miles on it. Do they make these seats with the seatbelts in the seats?
