Post Paint Defect...

I just discovered a fairly big paint defect in my truck, it's up on the roof which is why I didn't notice it before. There's a spot where the paint has a couple of thin spots, and what appears to be a blob of extra paint that sticks up quite a bit (almost 1/4" - don't know how this could even form...). Anyone else seen this? Should I take it back to the dealer for repainting? (You really never see this because it's on the roof, but it's irritating that it's there and I'm worried that the blob could crack off with pressure from snow/ice...)

In 1984 I bought a Suburban. I was proud as could be.

During the first hand-wash experience, I noticed what seemed to be bits of sand hidden under the paint.

The dealer honored my repaint request without any hesitation -- and the repaint looked absolutely wonderful...

...for a few years.

Then it developed more cracks and crevaces than a dried-up river bed. I kept the truck for 14 years -- and that spider-webbed top continuously reminded me of my request/decision.

If I had it to do over, I'd have lightly sanded-down those imperfections and covered it with a dot of paint.

From your example, however, it appears that you've got a similar, only much bigger, problem -- and I hope your paint shop can do a better job than the one that did mine.

Regards,

I had a portion of mine repainted. I really hesitated but there was a pretty good size dent. I asked them if they would warranty it for life - like the body shop I usually do business with - nothing doing! Three years or 36K mile. I will have issues if the new paint starts to crack!

The drivers side door seam also doesn't line up perfectly because of what looks to be a flat spot on the curve of the door. I choose not to have them fix and repair because I really don't think they could ever get the same quality of pain that is on it.

In retrospect I should have run it up the Ford chain of command. I work with a really good body shop in down that does fantastic work. The dealers body shop - well, lets just say I wouldn't let them paint my daugthers little red wagon! If they let me take it somewhere else I probably would have it fixed.

My $0.02!

My Supercrew just arrived this week and I went to pick it up from my dealer on Saturday. After just beginning the inspection process, I noticed a small "glob" of paint on the roof. It is just above the windshield, not quite on the roof. It appears to be about the size of 1/2 a grain of rice. It is under the paint and would have to be sanded or chipped put and then repainted. I was very fustrated and wanted their body shop to look at it and I wanted to know exactly what they were going to do (i.e. repaint a small section or the complete roof) and what about the clear coat? Their body shop doesn't work on Saturday, so I will know more tomorrow.

I have had experience with after market paint on my silver (clearcoated) Grand Caravan. About 5 yrs after the repaining, the clearcoat started peeling off. My wife say's it has melenoma.

I too will request a lifetime guarantee if they repaint any portion of the roof. For the kind of money we are paying, the truck should arrive perfect.

My truck was inspected at Ford and then at the dealership and no one found this. I don't like being Fords quality control, do you?

Tomorrow will be an interesting day.

The only flaw I found on mine at delivery was some trash under the paint on the rear drivers side door sill where you step into the back seat. Two spots the size of a nickle that look like hair. Dealer repaired no prob. No other flaws. (I've washed it by hand a few dozen times...)

Thumbs up

I had some bubbles on the lip of the hood and some paint drips on the rear quarter panel. The dealer repainted both and they look great. Just hope they hold up 5-10 years down the line!

I spoke with the Manager of the dealership's body shop. He reviewed with me the different techniques he would use to remove the paint "glob" from my white Supercrew. All of the techniques require re-clear coating the roof of the Truck. Sometimes you can do more damage to repair something then to leave it alone.

I asked him to look the truck over throughly, as if it was his own and give me his assesment. He found no other defects and said that the paint on the Supercrew was even better then the paint on his F350, so he was jealous. He felt that he wouldn't mess with it now. If at the 3yr/36k point it is still an issue, he would then repaint it and give me an addition 3yr/36k warrenty on the new paint. If I were to have it fixed now, I would only get the 3yr/36k factory warrenty.

I have opted to leave it alone. If in 3 years I am still bothered by it, I will have it repaired.

I just picked up my new 2001 screw lariat 4x4
and it has a paint defect where the clear coat has like a run or something it is only really noticable when the truck has just been washed , and I am very hesitant to let them sand on my new baby I would almost rather accept it as it is knowing that in a few years the paint wont look any different than it does today. I am getting many differant oppinions as to weather I should let the dealer touch it or not. I really think it looks fine , but like what was already stated for $30,000 +++ you do expect a new vehicle to be PERFECT! , and any smudge is a dissapointment!. any one else agree that at may be better to leave well enough alone!!!

Thanks Skully Dark Green SuperCrew. 5.4 lariat 4x4 w/ tan leather and 6 disk CD , power moonroof, bed extender. slider.

Unhappy

Globs, runs, overspray, grit, and can see gray primer in places. They had to buff whole truck, and paint the same rear section twice!!!!!!! i will be trading mine in soon (4yrs or less). Love the truck, HATE the paint.

I too have paint defects I am torn over. My screw is Az Beige with WW Blue on the bottom. Whe I received it there was a swear of the blue on the gas cap. They were able to buff this out. I have since found to very minor dents. One in the driver's door and rear passenger door. Have to be in the right light and the paint is is not affected.

The most major flaw I have is some weird foul up on the tail gate. There is a run of all things down the left edge. Also right beside the run the paint is screwed up. It looks as though someone accidently rubbed it with a rag before the paint was dry in the shape of a V and the clear coat was applied over this. Easily seen in the right light not all that noticable at other times.

I can't decide what to do. I can live with the doors but the tail gate bothers me. I am really concerned about the longevity of the body shop paint job. Opinions?
