Question What octane are you using?

Is 87 the correct octane to fill up with. Do any of you get any pinging from this lower octane? I know with the superchip, people are putting in 92. The dealer filled my tank with 87...just wondering if that is the one I should keep running with. Thanks in advance.

The owners manual for both of our trucks says to use 87 octane fuel. I just go with what Ford says, but I also don't have ANY modifications that would warrant higher grade fuels.

Ford recommends 87 Octane. If you do a search on threads, others have posted regarding this. As I recall, others have said they had problems when using a higher octane.

My thoughts? Don't waste the money on higher octane fuel for this vehicle that was set-up to run on the lower octane fuel.

Thanks guys! I've also read to keep filling up at the same station for consistancy. What happens on long trips? Does it really matter where you get your gas? I plan on taking many long road trips with my truck

Screwdriver2001,
I alway's use 87 octane.
As far as brand's go I have never heard of running from the same brand's , although I either run Citgo or Amoco because of the conveince of each station. It seem's to me that my truck does run better on amoco gas & I seem to get slightly better fuel economy with the amoco fuel.About .5-1.0 mpg more.
Who know's maybe it's just my imagination.
I'm also running pretty much stock with the exception of a k&n filter & gibson sweptside exhaust.

By the way nice looking ride!!!

ScrewDriver2001,

I believe that the manual says that when you are going to calculate MPG you need to use the same pump, at the same gas station, with your vehicle facing the same direction. This gives you a better reading of the amount of gas you put in the vehicle.

87 Octane is correct for stock 'Crew. I haven't had any trouble with my engine pinging even under hard acceleration, heavy load or steep, grindingly slow climb.

I wouldn't worry about using the same gas station. Go where you like and have had good results - a lot of the gas (even different brands) can come from the same refinery. On the road you don't have a lot of choice, just go somewhere reputable.

Somewhere, there is a report/study on gas in different states with suprising results. Some states had more disreputable distributors than average and mixed grades. This was done probably about 6 or so years ago. I believe the company that does the study is in NC.

Of course, the flip side of this is that dealers in every state will tell you they've had problems with the gas in their state and you need their expensive fuel system cleaning services. Just like just about every state has dealers that say vehicles in their state should follow the extreme conditions maintence because of the <fill in the blank>.

I have an FIPK and a Gibson S/S exhaust and still use 87 octane with no problems. The only performance issues I have discovered are between different brands of gas. Arco and Chevron give me the best performance and gas mileage. Shell, Costco and the other "noname" brands have resulted in sluggish performance and poor gas mileage. Just my experience and my .02.
