Question What's that noise?

Shortly after delivery I noticed a noise that sounds like a small electric motor running. It seems to be under the hood or dash on the driver's side. Only happens when at or near idle. A friend of mine says his Expedition has had the same noise since new.

Not really concerned, but very curious. Any ideas?

I don't know if you are hearing the same sound I did or not. I had a sound coming from under the dash that I too only heard at low idle. It occurred most when I had been stopped and began to take off at a slow speed. Mine was coming from the cable that runs into the cab from the firewall, just behind the brake pedal.(I think this cable goes to the RPM gauge) This cable is held to the firewall by a small plastic piece that is attached to the firewall. When I pushed this cable back towards the firewall, the sound would stop and when I let it go, it would come back again. I pushed this cable back towards the firewall and held it in place by putting a plastic wire tie through the hole in the small plastic piece that the cable runs through. I do not know why this cable caused the noise, but it has not made it since I did this.

I will try looking there to see if that might be it, but it sounds like it is higher up than that. It really sounds like a small motor turning on and off.
Thanks for the help.

Cool

The noise could be the cooling fan, open the hood, have someone ouside tell you when the fan cycles, even when cold the fan will cycle and makes a humming noise.

silverstreaker,
The noise I heard also sounded like it was much higher than where this cable is located. I thought my sound was coming from behind the dash guages and I kinda stumbled across the cable that was causing the noise. Hope you can find it, because mine drove me crazy.

Thanks skinny - I have determined its not related to the fan motor or the A/C. (yes, I'm in Florida and we A/C year round)Will probably be this weekend before I have a chance to check that cable. If it is related to the tach it would make since that it only occurs at certain RPM. This evening when I heard it the sound was so irregular (on & off) that it might very well be the cable. Will post what I find out.
2001supercrewnew - I considered the cooling fan early on because it was occuring at idle, but the noise sounds like it is right under the dash. The mystery continues.......
