Question Tires, Tires, What about Tires?

My Screw is on order. I got it loaded up with all the goodies including 17 inch wheels(aluminum) but I hate the factory Goodyears they are putting on for the Off Road package - A/T's or R/T's. I hate Goodyear tires, period. I told the dealer I wanted something else and he gave me this lost puppy dog look . Now I am here.

What I am seeking is a firm, good wearing, Quiet, road tire for occasional off-road and snow use. I think I have my heart set on some Michelin LTX M/S's. I am going to try to trade with a local tire dealer. Anyone have any better ideas on a very good, quiet tire???? I really don't like road noise.

I pulled off the stock goodyears on my f150 at 14k. Sold the wheels and tires all together. The replacements are Cooper Discoverer A/T's. They are just a tiny bit noiser than the stock Goodyears. They are rated in the Nov or Dec 99 Consumer Reports. Their ratings were
"the best of the group in snow traction -- They rated them down on "dry pavement braking
without ABS. My truck has ABS so I figured no problem. I think they are great-- super in the snow-- and still look brand new with 3k on them. -- Good luck

BFG Radial A/T KO's are the ticket. They have a 3 ply sidewall which doesnt allow for as much tire roll in corners. A truck this size should come stock with a stiffer sidewall tire. I noticed a great improvement over the Goodyears (sold them off to my dad for his expy! <eg> ). The ride changed only slightly and soon forgot about it after a few miles and the tires settling in.

The stock tires on my crew were General all weathers...they are terrible. After 7k miles I put on Eagle rims, 16x8, with Pirelli Scorpion AT, 275/70/16. They are quiet for an AT tire. The tread could be a little more aggressive but for the price they are good.

Dunlop also has Rover AT that may be more your speed if you do not need them much for off-road use. Good Luck.

have you also checked out Tire Rack's web site?
http://www.tirerack.com
they have alot of good info there. also, Yokohama makes a tire called the Geolander which might be a nice tire for your application. I heard some bad reviews regarding Dunlop Rovers and their habit of really breaking down quickly once they get to about 30k+ miles.

Thanks ptfii! I have been to the Tirerack website which is a very good site for sizing and pricing tires as well as getting feedback from users. I also looked at the Yokohamas and want to know a little more about the wear data. They may be a possibility.

I think I saw complaints on the "tire" board about the Yoko Geolanders wearing very unevenly, etc. and not lasting long. You may want to browse through.
My Big O XT's are great, but very aggressive and noisy. Big O has other tires available though. I went straight from the dealer to the shop were they had my new tires mounted on Centerline wheels I had taken to them. They gave me a good trade-in because I didn't have miles on the stock General slicks.

I traded my original tires for the Michelin LTX M/S as soon as I got the truck and I am happy with them. I noticed the ride was a little firmer than stock, but not a lot. They have very good traction in the snow, and run quiet on the highway. Mine are 10 ply and 16 inch.

klooger,
Just remember the "P" series tires are passenger car tires and usually 4 ply. The "LT" sizes are designed for light trucks -- as in pickups. The coopers I got are a LT series 10ply. Some LT sizes that some manufacturers make are 6 ply. Just know what you are getting in whatever brand you buy.

Thad - Thanks for the information. For what its worth - I called a local tire dealer - Discount Tire (www.discounttire.com) and they said they would trade the Goodyears for the LTX M/S no problem. I think there was a $20 difference in tire cost that I am going to pay but that's nothing compared to hating your ride for 40,000 miles! Michelin is one of the few companies that has a 17 inch tire that will work with my rims. My second choice of tire would probably have been the BF Goodrich Radial AT KO's. I understand they are a great off-road tire and wear like steel, noisier than the Michelin though because of the more aggressive tread.

When I move west I'll get the he-man tread. Right now, my weekend warrior status dictates a quieter tire.

Thanks all for the feedback - this site is great!

Replaced my stock tires/whhels immediately after i purchased my then new 97 RCFS. Installed BFG 275/60/R17 tires on Center Line Cobra wheels. Got 50k out of em, my only complaint, "too noisy". Next came GY Eagle GTII 275/60R17, "same complaint". I did read of a way to block the rear vent openings in the cab, which should block a lot of the noise...Mark...aka sundayniagara@hotmail.com...doorslammer69 email doesn't work anymore.
