Post SCrew For Towing Trailers

I'm doing research for getting a travel trailer next summer that I can tow with my SCrew. I'll probably stick to something less than 25 feet. Can 5th Wheel trailers be towed with the SCrew since the bed is so short? Any recommendations on trailer hookup types, e.g. load equalizing hitches, sway bars, etc.
Thanks for any and all thoughts.

Many thanks for the responses. I've since discovered there is a sticker on my receiver hitch with the hitch ratings. For weight carrying: Tow 5000 lbs / tongue 500 lbs.
For weight distribution: Tow 8700 lbs / tongue 870 lbs.

Thanks for the info Raoul. I scanned all the posts on the site you posted and took a few notes. Next step is to see if I really find a 5th Wheel I want or just settle for a bumper hitch trailer.
Tom

Your choices may be few, but you might find a fifth wheel light enough to do what you are wanting. I am in the process of selecting a trailer and truck. I really didn’t want the F250 as a daily driver. Fuel economy and tight parking was pushing me toward a Screw. I could not find a combination I thought would work. You need to watch the weights closely if you want to be safe and legal. I’m not saying you won’t get by with a overloaded truck. I am not willing to put my family’s safety at risk. The liabilities if involved in a accident could put a damper on the festivities for a long while. The DOT and many states are starting to clamp down on overloads on the road.
Better find you a 250 Super Duty or a small tag if you want to stay safe and legal

A SCrew has a GVWR of 6750 and a rated payload of 1670 lbs. It has a trailer towing capacity of 7700 pounds, which could easily be reduced by the number of passengers, additional cargo, fuel, and supplies.

Looking at the GVRW realistically. Dry weight 4800 + 120 lbs fuel, 220 lb driver, 140 lb wife, 100 lbs luggage, and a 75lb fifth wheel hitch. Now we have a max of 1200lbs you can put on the hitch. Most 25-27’ FWs have a 1000lb tongue weight. If you have two kids along for the ride, you are over weight. In reality the actual weight you are carrying would be higher than the numbers I threw out.

There are a few 20 to 22’ lightweight FWs out there like the Tahoe or Wanderer Lites. I want one of the toy box versions so the lightweight stuff is not really an option.

Next look at the weight of the FW. Dry most 25-27’ weigh in at minimum of 5500 to 6000. 50 gallons fresh water, 40 gallons gray and black tanks, and you have another 750 on top of that. By the time I throw all the rest of my crap in. I would be overweight by a long shot. I would rather have too much truck than not enough.

The fifth wheel is a couple of years off, so I’m ordering a new F150 Super Crew. The wife claims she is satisfied with her 98 Explorer for the next 4 or 5 years. Next year I’ll order a F350 DRW SuperDuty PowerStroke and we’ll start looking for the fifth wheel.

I dont tow with a SCrew..at least not yet. I have a 26ft BH Salem Lite TT that I pull with my F150, 4WD, SC, 4.6. It weighs dry at around 4800 lbs. Using the Equalizer hitch system which is very nice. Once you have it set the first time it nothing to take on and off. I'm looking at getting a SCrew with 4WD and the 5.4. mainly for the bigger can space. Although the bigger engine will be nice also.
