Re: Headrest complaint - NHTSA
CaceeJay, Maybe I can help you with the car seat issue, I'm a certified car seat technician, (certified by AAA). All supercrews have child seat anchors. Look behind the seat and you will see a nylon strap with a hook. That is your anchor hoook. It may look cheap, but it will work.
When you put your child seat in, can you move it more than an inch side to side? If so, the seat is to loose. Use the trucks "switchable" seat belt mode. To get to that mode, pull the seatbelt out all the way slowly. When you get to the end, let it in a little bit, then pull on it. You will hear a "ratchet" sound when letting it in, that means it's in "switchable". Two, when you pull, the belt will be locked.
Next, if you have one, use a binder clip, and put it at the top so the belt won't feed in. Then put your knee into the child seat, and feed the belt through the proper area of the child seat. Once you lock the belt in, let the slack out of the belt while you still have your weight in the seat. Then have your wife pull a few more times. When you take your weight from the seat, the child seat should be very snug.
About the rear headrests, I agree that Ford has a major issue, and it sucks your wife had to find out the hard way. If you have any questions on your car seat install or where you can go to make sure you have it installed correctly please send me an email at azambonin@ci.fremont.ca.us.

az2528..Thanks for the info. I wondered what that strap was for. Other than that, we already have our child seat installed the way you described.

I think that we should take our case to another level by enlisting the help of BlueOval News in our initiative. They probably reach a lot of people who may not know about our message board. Last week, I sent them the following email message:
A number of 2001 SuperCrew owners (myself included) are upset that Ford decided to include rear seat headrests and rear child seat anchors in 2001 SuperCrew models built after November 1. Our view is that Ford would not make a change of this magnitude in the middle of a model year if it didn't have serious concerns about the safety of the initially produced vehicles. To that end, various members of our forum, F-150 Online, have decided to file complaints with the NHTSA in the hopes of forcing a recall. Here's a link to our discussion thread on this issue --- I had a valid reason to complain as a recent panic stop at 25mph caused my wife's head to strike the rear window upon recoil and my 3 year-old child to cry in fear after her car seat lurched violently forward and back during the stop.
Given the recent flap regarding Explorer rollovers and the other types of vehicle problems documented on Blue Oval News, we are concerned that Ford might try to sweep this problem under the rug and leave the initial purchasers of SuperCrews with no recourse but to replace their rear seats or install the headrests and child seat anchors at their own cost.
Here's their response: We would be willing to post a message on the front page of BlueOvalNews.com making consumers aware of your NHTSA initiative at F150online.com. See what the consensus is to this proposal with other members of the site and get back to me if you want to procede.
Sorry about the length of this post...but what do you think?

I think it would benefit us to have this information brought out into the open. I am sure that there are a lot of SCrew owners that are not aware of this problem. The more noise we make the better( The Squeeky wheel gets the grease). I hope after the tire recall Ford will take this as seriously as we do. I also had to stop quickly the other day and my fiend it his head on the back window. I thought the glass was going to break. I am going to do everything I can to get this problem corrected and I hope all of you feel the same way.
