Anyone Have Frame-Mounted Nerf Bars ??
I visited a local 4X4 specialty shop to check on Westin Nerfs yesterday and the guy there tells me that he doesn't know of any Nerf Bars that actually mount to the truck frame for the F-150 or similar vehicles. He says they all mount to the body under the doors. I know you can get frame mounteds for Jeeps.
Does anyone know of a frame mounted Nerf Bar for the SCrew ??

Check into Smitty Bilt. They use to make frame mounted.
I must ask however why you are so set on frame mounts? I had the smitty Bilt frame mounted bars on my '97 F150. You could never keep the chrome clean under the cab so they always looked dirty.
These new bars that mount to the factory locations are pretty sweet! I have Westin's. They are as sturdy if not sturdier than my Smitty Bilts and are a breeze to keep clean.
The only down side is that you do not have the flexibilty with the mount location. they are a little to close to the cab but all-in-all a pretty nice step!

Hey kirt,
I'd like the nerf to be more of an integrated structural part of the vehicle in case I get onto a large rock while four-wheeling or hit from the side in the urban jungle. If the Body-Bolted nerf ends up riding on top of a rock or hit from the side, I'd imagine that the body is going to get tweaked pretty easy.
What do you think ??

I had ICI bars on my Dokota (before SuperCrew
and they were frame mount. So I figured lets do ICI again. Well I have ICI bars on my SuperCrew but they are not frame mount.
I'm thinking that maybe it depends on the make and which is easier to manufacture.

I ordered WAAG nerf bars. The website said that all of their bars were frame-mounted. After I paid $75 for shipping, I saw that they were body-mount; I was not happy. I don't plan on getting hung on a rock, but if in a wreck, I just imagined the side of the truck crumpling in. When I called WAAG, they said that all were frame-mounted when able, but not mine, they couldn't make them like that.

Femseadoo -- got any pics of your Trenz grill OR Waag steps? I'm considering both of them. If not, would you mind telling me about the Trenz? I want to know if it's nicely polished, and how many bars go across (I like more, smaller bars rather than fewer, bigger bars). Thanks.
DesertDog,
I have black Ram nerf bars on my Harvest Gold Suupercrew. The Rams mount to the frame in the front and to the spring bolt in the rear. The reason I went with the Rams is not that they mount to the frame but that they are about 2 inches further out from the side of the body and therefore easier to use to step on as opposed to the body mount. GOOD LUCK in your decision

BIG EAGLE,
How do they look extending out the additional distance ? If you took a yard stick and 'straight-edged' it from the middle of the door to the outside edge of the nerf bar, would the nerf bar be inside or outside of vertical (I assume, a little outside) and by about how many inches. In other words how much does the bar stick out outside the normal max width of the body ?
Did you install yourself ?
Is the frame mount as rock-sturdy as it seems it would be ?
Here's a crazy question from a 4-wheeler living in 'the land o' rocks'. Do you think the bar, as mounted, would allow you to jack up your vehicle using the the nerf bar as your jack point (where the steps are located) ?? I dont expect a scientific answer on this one, just a gut feel based on the weight of the bar and your observations about its' 'heavy-dutiness'.
Does it seem like the spring (rear) mount would take some abuse without damaging the spring mount ?
Thanks in advance for any info !

DesertDog,
Here goes. The bars extend exactly one inch outside the body side moldings on the front doors. Installed myself. The first one took about 45 min the second about 20. I guess after the first one I knew what I was doing. The front has a bolt that inserts through holes already in the frame and the rear around the rear spring mount. Really no too bad of a job. The bars are rock solid. I would not be suprised if you could lift the truck by the bars towards the ends. In the middle with the weight of the truck and the length of the bars??? Not that the bars aren't very sturdy but I do not know exactly the stress you would be putting on the jack point. As far as the rear mount there is a flat flange on the rear mounting point. You must remove the nut on the front spring bolt then slip on the flange and put the nut back on. There should be no abuse to either the bar or the spring mount the way the bar is attached. I hope all this will be of some help.
