Post A/C acting Strange

guys,, this weekend i took a 300 mile trip and on the way home, my a/c starting acting up. it would not stay cold, it would get very warm, then when i turned the a/c switch to off for a period of time, and then turn it back on it would get cold for a short time and then go back to warm air, it would also not make a difference when i went to max air, then after returning home, and sitting over night the a/c is working fine today,, could the compressor been over heated?,, any suggestions, its still hot here in florida.

Thumbs down

Mine has always done the same as well. I have had my truck since April and have taken it to the dealer several times but it is still not fixed. They replace the high pressure switch but this did not fix it. The register temp does not really get hot, but warms up into the 68 degree range when it is 90 outside. This lasts 10 or 15 minutes and then gets cold as it should. Seems like it could be freezing up (?) It is an intermittent problem, and of course works fine at the dealership.

BTW, it is going to a different dealer in a couple of days to take another whack at it, as well as to fix a leaking power steering hose and rear diff front seal

capfay,,, sounds like we have a similar problem,,, it is intermittmnet so it makes it hard to run down, i was set to take it to the dealership this am, but it was working fine, when you explained your concern to the dealer did they have aproblem finding the high presure switch as the problem, it does act like it is an electrical, switch or relay.. but i dont know anything about a/c.

thanks koot, i was traveling on the turnpike at 75/80 when it starting acting up,, i had the temp control turned a little of totally cold, and when i went back to all cold and a/c it would not re-engage the compressor i think. it blew hot until i went back to off and drove a few miles and restarted the a/c. the longer i drove the less that approached worked. until it set over night. vacuum??

If you are idling for a period of time the high pressure side of the system may increase to the point of shutting the system down to prevent damage-blown hoses, compressor seal, etc. R134a doesn't work well without adequate air flow through the condenser. The high side pressure can reach 400 psi very quickly on a hot, humid day when stuck in traffic. Some people will add an auxillary electric fan in front of the condenser to resolve cooling issues in city traffic. This is a common procedure when you retro-fit an R12 system over to R134a. If it is happening while on the highway, then I would suspect the system is freezing up due to moisture in the refregerant or the system is over charged. The system will need to be evacuated and recharged to the proper amount. If the dealer checks the operating pressures he should discover the fault.
