Question Changing the Oil.

How, what is the best and easiest way to get the oil filter out? Any special tools. This is a big pita, so far the only thing I hate about the Screw.

I think you have to turn the wheels to the right.. Thats what they had to do at Jiffy Lube anyway..

ralderman,

I bought an oilfilter cap wrench type (big plastic socket) tool at K-mart. Just put it on a 3/8 rachet and you can reach it straight up from the bottom on the 4x4. Just lay on your back under the truck reach straight up with one hand. Piece of cake, was actually easier than any of the cars I've owned recently. Forget about trying to get at it through the wheelwell I tried that first befor I found out how easy it was from underneath. Hope this helps, -wayne

Hey Crewchief,

I noticed that you have a cabin air filtration system. Can you tell me a little about the system. Did you install it, are you happy with it, how much did it cost etc.

Thanks in advance.

Wing,

Its an rectangular air filter that fits up under the dash just above the front passengers toes. It filters all the fresh and recirculating air. Yes it does make a difference in the amount of dust I have to wipe off the dash as compared to my Civic. I paid $66.67 + tax at the dealer parts counter, on my receipt it says the list price is $105.00 what a joke! I thought what I paid was a lot for what you get in the box. The part # is F65Z*18D477*AA
Yes I did install it myself, its a fairly simple operation but let me warn you that because of its location it will be helpful if you remove your spine and shrink your head by half its size befor you start. It took me maybe an hour but its one of those things that after you do one the next would take half the time.
Its recommended that the filter be changed yearly or sooner if you live or drive in an extremely dusty climate like I do. I havent replaced mine yet so I couldn't tell you what replacement filters cost. If you get a good price on the kit I think its worth doing, if not save your money and get a Superchip. -wayne

Here's my story.

Went to change the oil for the first time. Had the six quart case of mobil-1 and a K&N filter ready to go (pre-filled with oil, of course). After draining the pan, I come to find out that my wrench (band style) wont clamp down on the filter tightly enough to remove it. Not only was there very little room to maneuver, but that damn filter was on TIGHT! Even if I could get to the store, I wasnt about to spend money on a different type of wrench - which will never be used again (K&N filters have dimple on the end which fits a 1" wrench/socket).

First thing I had to do was to remove the front skid plate. The next step was to take a thin, straight blade screwdriver and hammer it through the sides of the stock filer (this is how I used to change my honda's filter). With the screwdriver all the way through (in one end, and out the other) the filters body, I was able to twist the filter enough to release the seal. Out comes the screwdriver, and I finished the job bare-handed.

After that, the rest of the job was cake.

By the way, stay away from jippy lube. Their house brand oil filters (penzoil) are actually made by Fram, and we've all read the post about Fram's crap-tapy filters.

Chief,

Thanks for the info about the air filter. I may give it a try. I have pretty bad allergies and any extra filtering would be beneficial.

Those of you changing the oil, do you raise the truck with ramps to get to the filter? I have a 4x4 with 17" tires, I have never tried "turning the wheels right" while on a ramp. My running boards restrict me crawling in behind the left front tire, do you reach the filter from the front of the tire?

I have a 4X4, with 17", and factory color keyed cab steps, don't use any reamps, just slide under from the right side, reach up and remove and replace the filter, no problem, just a little messy at times.

Ditto. I use my right hand to unscrew the filter, it's surprising how much leverage you can get, and left hand to screw the new one on (after getting it started with my right.) I wear a pair of rubber-coated work gloves for extra traction.

I purchased one of those cup type oil filter wrenchs(93mm 36 flutes) that fits on the 3/8 ratchet and it worked like a charm. That is after I figured out that you had to install the ratchet only deep enough to turn the socket when on the filter. I was down there 15 minutes cussing and spitting because the dang thing kept slipping off the filter. But as soon as I figured it out the old came off and the new was on in about a minute. I suggest you give it a try. Just like Crewchief said just lay on your back, reach up and go for it!

Get a deep-cup type, not one that is only about 3/4" deep.
