Question Glasstite or ARE cap for my SCrew??

I am looking for a cab-high cap with lots of window area. I don't like the LEER because it has too little glass.

I've narrowed it down to the ARE-Z series cap and the Glasstite Targa.

I haven't seen a SCrew with a cap anywhere, except on web sites. I have only seen 1 other SCrew in town (yeah).

Anyway, I like the looks of the ARE-Z.

I've had 2 dealers tell me 2 different things about caps.

The first dealer says that the Glasstite Targa cap has a much better construction than the ARE-Z series cap. The Glasstite is a one piece mold, stronger, the Cadillac of caps.

He also says that the Glasstite cap covers the whole bed rail so the plastic cap is covered.

I looked at Glasstite's site and the skirt or whatever it is, is an option, not standard.

He wants $1430 for the Glasstite and $1300 for the ARE-Z. A $130 difference. I see why he would say that the Glasstite is a better deal.

He also says that the ARE-Z is more than one piece and is aluminum rails with screws to keep it together as opposed to the Glasstite that is one piece.

Now, dealer #2 says that the Glasstite is the cadillac also but that the ARE-Z is a better seller and the cap covers the rail and is standard. (Also less money). He also mentions that the ARE-Z looks better cause it has a curved rear window and the Glasstite is flat. The SCrew has lots of curves and that the ARE-Z adds to the curved look.
He told me $1195 for the ARE-Z and $1475 for the Glasstite. He said the headliner was $110 and wired dome light for $25. A difference of $280. Not a lot of money difference in either case.

Got to admit, the ARE-Z is a good looking cap.

Does anyone have any advice for me?

The advice I need is only for these two caps. I live in Connecticut so the cap selection is limited.

So, fellow SCrew owners, which cap?

Is the Glasstite worth $280 more? (or $130 more depending which dealer I pick from)
I plan to keep the truck 6 years.

Thanks for your advice, and especially for your patience in reading this rambling.

I ordered the ARE. Delivery is expected in 6-7 weeks. I got it with the headliner. Mine with tax, clamps, and install (w/ 3rd brake light) was 1350. The dealer really advised against the window boot due to squeaks and rubbing. I am not sure it will be that bad, but went with his advice. I haven't seen the Glasstite, but there was not other dealers in a reasonable drive, and the ARE seemed fairly well built. my $.02

I agree with you on the windows...

Just noticed my signature block still said Snugtop.

Also, ARE said their cap won't interfere with the bed extender...

"Dear David,

Thank you for your submission to A.R.E.'s Suggestions, Questions and Ideas. Your entry will not be displayed on our Web site. The Suggestion, Question, or Idea that you submitted is:
I have a 2001 SuperCrew with the metal bed extender, a factory optioned "cage" that pivots out onto the lowered tailgate for more cargo capacity. Many of the non-ARE caps have seen do not have the clearance necessary for the bed extender to swing out without hitting the gas struts used to raise the cap door. Have you looked at this and does your cap have the clearance necessary? Also, my local ARE rep had no info on the remote keyless option. How difficult would this be to self-install?

Answer: The bed extender will work with our caps on the Super Crew Ford. As far as installing the e-locks, we have individuals doing it all the time. We have very specific instructions we send with it. Thanks.

GTD,
Personally, I like the Glasstite better. I'm going to hold out until they make a high-rise 2000. The 2000 has a curved rear door that almost goes on top of the shell, so loading is easier. It also comes with the headliner and domelight. (Don't know if they're making a cab high for Crew yet.) The Targa has a slanted rear door, which in my opinion, doesn't look much different than the ARE. I also like the one piece construction.

dtrosch and Femseadoo,
Thanks for the replies.

I'm going to go with the ARE-Z. I saw one on the lot of the dealer and it really looked sharp. Lots of glass.

I saw a Glasstite 2000 (that's just about the price also) with the slide over door and it did not have a all glass rear window whch I am looking for.

There wasn't a Glasstite Targa on the lot to look at but I think that the ARE-Z will fit my needs fine and it will be less expensive.

dtrosch, teh ARE-Z says that one of the options is a "front picture window"? What is that? A bigger front window that normal?

Did you get a price on the roof racks?
Thanks

GTD/KAD,

My undersatnding of the window options (where the cap meets the truck's back window) are as follows:

1 No window--open completely. Usefull if you oredered the boot, but sounds fairly uncommon.

2 "Picture" window--solid non sliding window. Not bigger, but if you didn't get the "slider" on your truck, a one piece window on the cap is just fine.

3 "Single slider"--standard on the Z line, just like the slider on the truck. Actually three pieces of glass with the center section that can be moved in a track.

4 "Dual slider" -- another option that splits the single pane in half, with each section moving to either side. Not really more usefull, but I suppose if you had the Dodge Ram or other truck that had dual sliders and wanted it to match...

I don't remember the exact price on the roof rack, but for some reason $160 seems to stick in my head. I didn't order it because I like the slick top look, and I don't plan to haul much that won't fit in the bed.

I was told the factory is 4-6 weeks behind, with delivery 6-8 weeks after the order. I guess that's better than the 10-12 weeks I waited for the truck.

Good luck. I'll post a pic when I have it installed.

northcrew,

I just ordered the ARE-Z cap today from Cap City in Danbury, CT (203) 792-5172 or 1-800-3-CAP-CITY. I got a price from PANNON PRODUCTS in Wolcott, CT but he was more than $100 higher.

It's amazing, I saw a LEER on a SCrew just today. First live cap on a SCrew that I've seen. Looked kinda like a Expedition.

When I ordered the truck I didn't see a SCrew in town then the day I picked it up I saw one. Two days ago I saw an identical one to mine, I slowed down to acknowledge the other driver on his good taste but he just kept driving.
Today, an hour after I order my cap I see one (although not an ARE) on a SCrew. Go figure.

Anyway, the ARE-Z series cap from CAP CITY cost:

$1195 - Cap
110 - Headliner (keeps condensation away)
245 - Roof Rack (my wife wanted it)
50 - 2 clothes hangers
-20 - ARE coupon from Web site
$1580 - Total (wow)
94 - tax (wow again)
$1674.80 total installed.
I think she added wrong the total should be $5 less.

They threw in the hard wired dome light, a $25 value.

The headliner is supposed to keep the condensation to a minimum. My wife and I got our truck without a slider window, now that she saw a cap with a slider she thinks we should gotten the slider on the truck. Too late now. We ordered the cap with the solid window. I think the slider is standard on the ARE-Z and the solid glass is a no cost option.

I had my white/silver 'crew fitted with a Raven truck cap from Glasstite and love it. Great fit...great value. $900 plus tax plus $50 installation...total price just over a grand.

Glasstite has one heck of a product.

By the way, on the topper's maiden voyage, I topped of the tank and drove 157 interstate miles...then topped off the tank again with 7.85 gallons. That's 20 MPG!

Question

GTD/KAD,

What dealers in CT. did you go to? I am looking for a cap also and saw the A.R.E. at Killians in East Windsor, though not on an actual truck. Based on pictures only so far I like A.R.E. with the Snugtop coming in second. I have not seen any pictures of the Glasslite though.
Also what advantages are there in getting a headliner? Is it purely cosmetic?
Good luck and keep us posted I'll do the same.
