Composite bed?
Does anyone know anything about the composite beds Ford is using now? Are they used for all trucks, the Screw or just the Explorer SportTrac? What part is metal and what part is "composite"?
The Sport Trac is the only Ford vehicle with the composite bed. The bed is 100% SMC plastic(sheet molded composite). About 20% lighter than standard.

The exterior part of the bed is some kind of composite. The interior is sheet metal.

The exterior of the bed on the SCrew is composite (at least the pilot builds were). The inner tray is steel. Ford has been using composite boxes on the Ranger splash for at least 3 years, probably more.
I did not know about the Sport Trac, of course it is not a truck anyhow ......8^)

If the exterior of the Screw bed (<sorry about that) is "composite", what is it really made out of? Does it dent, flex, or does it just crack like fiberglass? It sure is easy to pull some dents and do a little touch-up? But then, you have to deal with rust. Is one stronger than the other? I guess I don't know which is better, metal or "composite".
