Question 4.6 Liter HP Change

Does anyone have a definite cut-in date for the 240H HP version of the 4.6 liter engine. My dealer does not know and Ford, through their Owner Connection WEB site, intially told me they had no specs on the engine for 2001, then later verified there is indeed a HP increase but could not tell me when it would be shipped in the Supercrews. They told me to check with my dealer???
I've been reading this site since I first became interested in purchasing a Supercrew. Its great, packed with lots of helpful info and good people willing to share there knowledge and expierence. I am looking forward to my new truck and helping anyone out on this site when I can.

I think I read on Edmunds website that Ford would start putting them in at the end of September, 2000. I did a lot of research on this the past couple of days because my crew will be built in 3 weeks and I was wondering why should I pay $680 more for only 20HP in the 5.4? (No info. on the Ford site)
It's supposed to be the same 4.6 that's in the Expedition; 20 more HP, but still only 290 ft/lbs of torque at 3,250 RPM. I decided to keep my order as is, just for the increased torque.

Wink

The increase in HP will make a minor difference. However, if you are not satisfied with the "power" of the current 4.6L you will not be satisfied with the higher Hp 4.6L. Torque is what really rules in a truck and the 5.4L is the only answer.

Thanks for the replies. I drove both back in June. There is definetly more torque in the 5.4l. I, however, am coming off from driving for 16 years, a 84 Nissan pickup 4x4 with a 4 cylinder engine that was considered under powered when it was new. So the 4.6l was like a rocket ship to me. After seeing the gas mileage figures that everyone has between the two engines (about the same) I have had some regrets for not ordering the 5.4l. But I can live with the 4.6l without a problem. I don't plan on doing any heavy towing but like the heavy duty stuff you get with the trailer pkg. After I saw the rumors about the the 4.6l HP increase I just thought it would be nice to get it if possible. Mine is being built the week of 9/18 maybe I will get lucky.

northcrew,

Even if you don't get the 240 hp version you will not be disappointed. I too read all these posts with 5.4 engines and almost begin to doubt my decision to pass on the 5.4. But after checking mileage following a 100 mile trip I was pleasently surprised. 20 MPG!

The mileage is more like the 5.4's for around town but it's nice to know that for highway commutes it's not alot different than my tiny Bronco II. And I still have yet to find a situation where the 4.6 was not enough. This is a great truck.

Enjoy!

Thumbs up

Northcrew....here are my two cents!

I purchased a Supercrew 5 months ago with the options as below...

XLT,4x4,4.6L,17"tires,10spoke rims, dark wedgewood blue/silver...every XLT option!

This truck was sitting on the lot and ready to go with all the options I was looking for...so I bought it! Before I bought it I had questioned the 4.6L, but after talking to other 4.6L owners and driving the truck around the countryside for the past 5 months I never have questioned it's performance and reliability. I have pulled four place snowmobile trailers, 22'holiday trailers, motorbikes, quads and have always been very pleased with the power of the 4.6L motor...it gives my buddies 1999 4x4 dodge 1/2 ton, and 2000 chevy 4x4x 1/2 ton a run for their money, they are amazed at how this smaller V8 perform's when worked!!!

Besides, if I wanted to pull the real big loads I would of bought a Superduty Powerstroker and not been able to park it in my garage.

Never doubt the performance AND RELIABILITY of the 4.6L Triton motor...it may be small, but big things come in small packages!!

Superchip and exhaust are there if you need them down the road!!

In my 5.4L S-Crew one week. 240 miles mostly residentila and city driving and got nearly 17 mpg. Can't wait to see where the MPG settles on this hog after 1000 miles. Lokks like it won't be too bad at all.
