new shocks for supercrew?
Has anyone replaced the shocks on their 'crew yet? Anytime I have a few friends riding in the truck, I can't help but think of sitting in the back seat of the old yellow school bus.... bouncey bouncey!
Other than that, my 'crew is doing just fine... after hitting 6k miles, it seems that my mileage went up drastically. Actually got 17mpg out of a tank recently. Alert the press! (I've been used to 12.5-13.5 average mix driving)

JC,
It sounds like even though one of the shocks is staggered, they are both the same length. I have heard of a bunch of people using aftermarket shocks on these trucks so someone should have a better answer.
Did you get your gears changed yet? If so, how are they working out?

Have not done the gears yet... my mechanic friend and I have checked out the work involved (I've never done a R&P install in the front differential like my 4x4 has- so I was a little skeptical, but he's done a few like it). Anyway, we just need to find the time to do it. Definitely am not going to pay the dealer $1500 to do it. Will let everyone know how it went once we're done.
Later!

jC,
Your jump in gas milage may be due to the gas you are buying. Seems like the gasoline companies may be reformulating their gas to take out some of the evil chemicals or something. I usually see a change between milage with the summer and winter formulas down here in Louisiana but I noticed a big jump in my milage with Texaco regular recently in mid-summer. I haven't measured it but I'm getting an extra 40-60 miles to the tank on my Dakota. Still waiting on my S'crew, hope to see it about the middle of September.

jC,
What mileage are you getting pulling your trailer? I averaged 8-10 mpg on trips to LimeRock and VIR with a 6000 lb 20' covered car trailer and only 2000 miles on the truck.

Hauling my ~ 5500lbs worth of open trailer/camaro and race gear, it seems we've been getting around 10-11mpg on average. The problem is that the mileage swings wildly on the type of driving (as you'd expect). Coming back from memphis with about 1500 miles on the truck, we got over 340 miles on one tank (with 2 gallons to spare)... mostly because we were coasting down from the mountains of Asheboro and heading back down to Raleigh, and traffic was light. We also averaged about 80mph.
One more thing about mileage- I noticed this with my '98 too... it seems Ford sets the speedo/odometer a little on the conservative side with the big offroad tires. There were other cars/trucks in our caravan to/from Memphis this year and every one agreed on the speed/mileage but us. IIRC, it was off by about 3/4s of a percent. (i.e. at 75mph, my speedo would read 70, same thing happened for number of miles between fillups) Anyone else notice this?
