Post SuperCrew Cab Roof Rack

Need a temporary roof rack or crossbar to hold one end of a canoe. Will hold other end with "T" mount attached to receiver hitch. Would like something to clip to the area where the top of the door meets the roof line. Tried Yakima but no luck. Company rep
said that they didn't have a product for the 2001 SuperCrew. I do not want to permanently attach a rack or crossbar to the roof and the truck has a hard tonneau, so a bed rack is out. Any suggestions.

I recently looked everywhere for a roof rack for a supercrew and talked to customer service at both Thule and Yakima. No luck from Yakima but Thule told me they have a specility rack #445 that will fit the Supercrew. The bad news is that they told me it would not be available until the end of September.

Thanks for posting this. I've been trying to figure out how to carry a johnboat on my Supercrew. My idea was a roof rack and hitch mounted T bar but I hadn't seen a roof rack.

jeb,
Thanks for the info.
It is bad news on the delivery,
but at least they are working on it.
I'll still need something in early
September. Maybe I'll use foam blocks,
but I hate to do it. Afraid to damage
the paint.

What about using the universal gutterless rack from JC whitney for supporting the canoe and using two tie downs in the front going to the two tow hooks below the front bumper? (duct tape cloth on the tie down where they touch the hood to protect the paint)The rack would only be supporting the canoe, not holding it on, therefore not requiring a high quality connection.

I have used this method before on a previous vehicle while using a saw horse in the truck bed in lieu of the T-Rack.

CASUPERCREW,
Not a bad idea.
But, how about for paint protection
from the tie downs, sliding on those
foam wraps that are sold to insulate
piping? They are slit down the length
so that they can be put around the
tie downs after they are on and be adjusted
anywhere along the tie downs.

Question

This may be more involved than you want to go, but what about a 2" front hitch, and just mirror what you want to do in back in the front? Reese sells a front hitch kit, presumably to mount a winch, "push" a boat into the water, or other similar things. It may be more expensive than you want to go, but I thought it might be an interesting exercise, and would probably work well for a rowing shell...

DaveW,

The pipe insulation idea for paint protection is even better!

If you want a more finished look to the pipe insulation, many surf shops sell what amounts to the insulation wrapped in a soft nylon shell, often with the shop's logo silk-screened on it. Here is a link to Yakima's site with an illustration of their pad attached to their basic rack, but I have seen them used directly on some vehicle roofs.

I used to have a Thule system, and loved the quality. When installed, it was rock solid. Too bad they don't have a fix for you.

Thumbs up

To all looking for a roof rack,
I ordered a Saris #902 rack for my supercab to to hold my 14'6'' kayak.
By far it's the best looking rack and also very comparible in price. comes with locks and self centers.
they have all the accesories too, bikes, canoes, snowboards, ski stuff.
If anyones interested i'll get you the name of the place i got it from,( i forgot the name)
good luck bosch45
