Feedback on Black
Forgive my ignorance, but it has been over 12 years since i have owned a black vechicle.
I just purchased a 2001 Supercrew in Black (just loved the look) and was wondering if anyone has any major problems with the paint and If the maintenance is still as tough as I remember it being? Any tips and advice would be great.

I'm really looking forward to picking it up, I drove chevy s-10 blazers for the past 18 years and I've been converted. I just remember the nightmare of keeping black clean. but then again....that's what sons are for!!!!

Black is a great color when it is clean, however, I have experienced major swirl problems. I was able to get all of them out but one and I think it is below the clearcoat. The dealer and factory rep. looked at it and said the door would need repainting. I think I will live with.
The hood and bed will also show more scratches because of the non-metal surface. Becareful and keep the truck clean and you should love it.

Gator,
A tip I picked up from the general care forum; Wash and dry with 100% cotton cloth baby diapers (walmart), don't let it air dry but keep it all wet until finished washing and then dry. Seems to work well. I wash it 1-2 times a week and it looks like the day I drove it off the lot.

MiniCrew,
I have used the diapers in the past on my motorcycle and had great success with them, they are gentle enough not to swirl the black paint on my bike. But it's a much smaller surface and easier to work with. But as we know black is a pain. I'm just really psyched about the new truck!!!
Have you used a clay bar on the black, or anyone out there??
I was scared to use it on my bike for fear of scratch marks.

Gator,
This is my first black vehicle and I too love the look. So far no paint problems (have owned about a month) but it still is a pain to keep the just washed look. The way I look at it you just wash the truck more which is a good thing.
Enjoy the truck they are great!

Yeah, this is my first black one, and it is HIGH maintenance, but it looks sweet when clean - from everyone I have talked to, there is no way known to mankind to totally keep the swirlys off of black completely (or any other color for that matter!) Imean, mine had a couple of "spider web" looking spots on it from the dealership! That was the first wash/wax it ever had! A few other helpful hints though:
1. Amen to the cloth diapers - I personally have the yellow flannel cloths right now, but I will be getting diapers soon...but just keep the truck waxed often, then you can "blastoff" alot of the sand/dirt with a hose before having to touch it with a washrag
2. Always keep the cloth/sponge/rag/whatever during washing clean from sand/dirt as much as possible. This keeps you from rubbing the paint with "sandpaper" while washing (this also applies to waxing)
3. Zymol or 3M cleaner wax only - according to consumer Reports these have the best ability to "clean without scratching", but they don't last as long as other waxes...
4. Park the truck in the garage and build a glass case around it and vaccum seal it to get the dust out, then throw away the keys and go look at it everyday and remark to yourself "damn that truck looks good"
