Post BOUGHT 4.6 NEED MORE POWER

I WANTED THE 5.4 BUT THE WIFE SAW THIS S CREW
WHIT/SILVER W/4.6 AND SHE HAD TO HAVE IT
SEEMS A LITTLE SLUGISH UNTIL IT GETS UP TO SPEED
WHAT MOD'S CAN BE DONE TO ADD A LITTLE MORE
POWER WITHOUT TEARING INTO THE MOTOR OR A BLOWER? K&N? EXHAUST? NOT TO SURE IF A CHIP IS WORTH THE ADDED GAS $$?

Dear Shegamen,

The Superchip is the single-best bang for the buck power gainer, and is well worth any additional fuel costs; but of course I would say that, since we're the National Distributor. Most people do see a bit of a mileage improvement on these vehicles with the Superchip, though it usually won't make up for the entire cost difference between regular and premium gas, which the Superchip requires. For most people in these vehicles, the additional fuel costs add up to maybe $100 a year or so, unless you drive a very large number of miles, and use a lot of heavy throttle all the time.

There are also a couple other things you can do to help performance. The second most cost-effective mod on these vehicles is to use one of the airbox elimination kits, like the Airaid or the K&N FIPK kit. They will add an honest 12 horsepower on the 4.6. A good cat-back exhaust system is worth about 10 horsepower on these vehicles, and is usually the 3rd most cost-effective mod you can do for them.

We have Superchips available for some of the Super Crews, but it will depend on which computer code you have. Check in the passenger door frame, in front, in between the door hinges, and there will be a sticker with 3 letters and a number on it, and that is your computer code. If you contact us with that info, I can let you know if we have a Superchip available yet for your vehicle. And if not, you can still open up the intake & exhaust to help it's performance. You can find those parts in the F150online Digital Marketplace, as we only handle the Superchip products.

Feel free to give us a call of you like for more details, we're happy to try and help you without a sales pitch.

Best of luck with your new truck,

IMHO, what the 4.6 really needs isn't a chip but lower gears, especially if you have a 4X4 with the 17" wheels. 3.55 gears just aren't low enough for the powerband of that engine (that you say that the power is fine after you get up to speed is just more proof of this).

For the 4.6, I'd probably go with 4.10 gears if it is a 4X4 or has 17" rims and 3.73 gears otherwise.
